pros and cons of a weatherby action build...

I have the oportunity to buy a german made(sauer) Weatherby rifle in 300 weatherby magnum, and I would like to have your opinion on such matter, the barrel is heavily pitted and rusted but the action is intact; it has less than 100 rounds fired from it.

I would like to build a 338 edge on the action, but what are the pros and cons of this platform..

I know I can run into trouble with the trigger, but how bad are these?

I know it would be difficult to blueprint the action, but how bad do they need it?

I may be predigest because I use a lot of these actions and find them to be fantastic donor
actions for custom builds.

First the bolt face is correct for your build. Next the triggers are very good and with few
exceptions can be tuned/adjusted to work very well and if you are not satisfied with the
factory trigger Timney makes a very good replacement that is fully adjustable.

As for blue printing the action it is very easy and most of the time not nessary because of the
way the locking lugs are made and the quality of the machining (Squaring the reciever face
and lapping the lugs is the only thing I normally do automatically the rest depends on how
precision the machining was done.

All of this work can be done by a component gunsmith with excellent results. So if you have
a chance to get a Mark 5 as a don er for a custom build 'DO IT'.

The only thing that should be done is to mill the bolt stop groove longer to get the most
travel out of the bolt.

When done correctly the Mark 5 based customs are extremely accurate and good looking.

since krieger barrels are used by weatherby for their "custom" jobs, would it be easier for me to order one from them ?

I have a new 338 shilen cro-moly barrel in contour #4 in 28" plus the brake, what´s your opinion on it, or maybe I should order a heavier contour krieger in 30 inches plus brake?


besides bell and carlson who else should I go for a stock?

I´m not considering a custom made stock, just a plain jane solid working stock.

I think a #5.5 or sendero contour would be better if you want it 30" long.

If you dont mind the weight a #7 or 8 (Lilja contour or equivalent) would be the best but it
would add a pound to the rifles weight .

Also I would look for a laminate stock for better balance (The composites are light in the butt
stock area and the rifle will be muzzle heavy with the long barrel).

Stocky,s Stocks has a nice laminated stock for the Mark V for less than $200.00 .

Joe, best I can remember, you won't have to lengthen the bolt stop slot. The .300 Wby will have the long slot already.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't recommend using one of the German rifles as a donor, but in this case it makes sense.
