Shooting positions

Even though the prone is used when hunting at long range, would it improve accuracy in the prone position to practice long range shooting in all shooting positions(sort of like how practicing hitting left handed in baseball improves the right handed hitters ability to hit the ball)?

any type of shooting will only serve to make you a better shooter. that would include sporting clays, trap shooting and position rifle shooting.
the most accurate shooting is from a solid bench. next in line is a portable bench or an improvised rest of some type. a bipod would be a good example of that. a prone position with a bipod can be very accurate. problem is terrain wont always allow for that.
a solid rest should always be strived for in long range hunting. the various types of sticks, or a rock or log would be much better for most than a natural position.
cheat all you can in that regard.

I have been shooting off my ruck alot latley and have also been playing with shooting sticks and let me tell you I need alot more traning with the sticks

All positions can be used while hunting, if you are comfortable enough to use them.

What if you are in knee tall grass? A sitting position.
Wast high grass, kneeling.
Some situations may cause you to stand, shooting from a Y of a tree or shooting stick.
Off-hand proficiency may be most important when in grizzly country.

+1. Yobuck nailed it. Especially the last paragraph.
I find that most of my shots while hunting, even in wide open desert country, are off hand. So I practice off hand as well as off the bench, bi-pods,baggs,leadslead, logs, against a tree or fence post, etc. Most practice of this sort of practice is shooting sage rats with a 22, but I do the same with my big guns.
If long range is on the menue, a solid rest of some sort is a must. As Yobuck said, ''CHEAT ALL YOU CAN IN THAT REGARD''

Shooting in any and all positions is good, you never know when one of those positions is the only best choice.

i would dissagree chas. how were going to shoot is predetermined.
when we shoot it will be from a bench. even in places we pack in for hunting, we use a bench.
it might be a pile of rocks, or a light portable bench we carry.
we always ambush hunt from a predetermined location.
obviously different hunting styles would such as walk and spot would be different. but even if i chose to use that method, i would never use an unaided position for any type of long shot on game.
an average shooter with a good rest will outperform most good shooters unassisted.
especially when the hearts pounding faster.

Yobuck, I guess we agree to disagree, although what you described were 2 different positions under your term predetermined and then go on to talk about walk and spot but never unaided.

I never said unaided and can think of at least 3 positions one might use for walk and spot all can be with or w/o an aid...standing, kneeling and prone.

IMHO, type of hunting, terrain, density, distance and type of game may very well dictate various positions. Not to mention if a prey animal is stalking you and decides your dinner...I want to be proficient in shooting at least up close unaided and from whatever position afforded me the best self defense shot.
