First off I would like to say hi to all the shooting enthusiasts on this site !..
This will be my 1st post but I have been a member for several months just soaking up all the info on the pages within this site.
I am impressed with the way this site is ran and my hat is off to Len for doing such a great job !!..also to all the members on this site....you all conduct yourselves like true gentlemen and I am glad to be a part of this site !!.
Now the questions .......
I wanted to build myself a custom long range shooter but as of Feb I lost my job and as of yet I am not reemployed, so I have decided to hold off on the custom for the time being and I would like to do some things to the rifle that I currently own to make it as good a shooter as I can afford right now.
I have a Rem 700 SPS in 300 RUM which I purchased used and it came with a bunch of handloading stuff (brass,powder,dies,bullets etc) and it had a Nikon Buck Masters scope on it and a muzzle break.I got the whole package for $800.
The guy I bought the rifle from claimed that it will shoot .5 moa at 200 yards,but I have not even shot the rifle yet to confirm that claim as I immediately took the scope and and sold it.
Now do I have the factory stock pillar bedded ,or do I replace the stock with an after market stock like a Bell and Carlson Alaskan 2 or a HS Precision Pro Series Sporter stock on it ??
I plan on using Bushnell Signiture series rings and bases on it for the scope mounting, but which scope to use ? I have been shooting with Leupold scopes all my life and I really like them,but I have been doing alot of research on the Sightron S2 Big Sky also.
I am looking at the Leupold VX3 4.5-14X40 with CDS with a standard duplex reticle and I am also looking at the Sightron S2 Big Sky 4.5-14x44 with target turrets and adjustable objective and it has the dot reticle in it.The scopes are very comparable as far as price goes,but which one will be better for the application ? I do not plan on shooting more than about 8-900 yards with this set up.
I do my own handloading and I am loading for several rifles of which one is a Win Model 70 Stainless Classic with a bone stock barrel in 7MM RUM and I am getting 3595 fps with 150 gr Nosler Partitions and it shoots .685 3 shot group at 100 yards.
The trigger for now will just be the factory trigger adjusted down to 2.5-3 lbs.
What do I do ??

Verify the .5" at 200 yards and spend your money going hunting. Your good to go.

+1 on spending your money on a hunt sounds like you have plenty of gun. If your wanting to shoot 8-900 yrds I don't think the Leupold VX3 will get you there. Don't get me wrong Leupold is a fine scope for I have one on a 7mm. mag 800 yrds. it's maxed out. The drop turret that you order with your ballistic data has a zero stop on it witch only allows one turn of the turret.

On the turret cap from Leupold you can order it with or without the stop.My brother just checked on that for his scope.
So rdsewell you do not think that 14x on high mag is enough for 8-900 yds ??
I have shot critters that far away with a 10x Leupold with another rifle before and it did not seem that bad then ,so I thought 14x would be enough ??
I also know that the more mag you have the less light it will gather and it will affect the early and late shooting times...
So what magnification should I be looking for to shoot that far ??
Once I figure out the scope issue then I need to get it mounted on the rifle and work up a load to see how it really does shoot and then go from there.

Lots of folks here use 14x at 1000yards and are very happy with it. You just need to know if you have enough moa adjustment to get you there, if not you could go with a 10 or 20 moa base to help.

You seem to start by asking about one rifle (300rum), then go into the issues with a 7mm. For this, I'll stick to the 300rum....

Stock: Generally speaking, ditch the factory stock and get your hands on a quality aftermarket model (B&C and HS are good choices). Skim-coat bed it and if it does not have an aluminum bedding block in it, pillar bed it.

Rings: go with Burris Signature Rings. They come with plastic inserts so that you can cant your scope.

Optics: 14x is plenty to shoot as far as you want. Just this year I took a shot at a ground hog at 940 yards with my VX3 4.5-14x40. Had no problem seeing him clearly.

Trigger: tune the trigger to ~2 pounds.

You should also give some consderation to recrowning the barrel if it still has the factory crown on it.

I would say if it ain't broke don't fix it, advice that I keep hearing but I just have to tinker I would say the best thing I ever did is through my plastic stock in the dump and put a B&C Medalist on, I don't like the blocky forend but for a Rem I would look real hard at the Greybull Precision stock, all of the good none of the bad IMO. Precision Hunting Stock
A scope worth buying will be fine at a 1000yrds at 12-14 power, even 10x is fine in a nice optic. I would go with a finer cross hair than the standard duplex, at least for me it is to heavy to shoot very far with any precision.

First, shoot the rifle and see how it does before spending any money. I would also try and find a smith with a bore scope to see the condition of the throat. You should clean it first before taking it to be scoped.
Then, if it does not shoot, buy a used HS Precision stock for about $200 and skim coat bed it. Recrown the barrel if the throat is good, and shoot it again.
These 2 items give you good bang for the buck.
As far as scope, I would go up to the S3, not the S2. Had an S2 and it sucked.

I understand what everybody is saying about the moa rings and mounts. On the Leupold VX3 CDS scope it has a positive stop on it. Mine has a 200yrd. zero and dials up to 800yrds. And 14X is plenty.

Ok so far the consensis is that a 14x scope is plenty ,and about 50/50 on replacing the stock.It looks as though alot of gentlemen on here are using the Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 scope,but there has only been one person say anything about the Sightron and it was to move up to the S3 model.
The only problem with moving up to the S3 is $$$ which I am limited and the S3 models are higher magnification scopes for target shooting and the higher magnification will limit my early and late shooting times. The Leupold scope has 71 moa windage and elevation and the Sightron has 80 moa windage and elevation.So does everyone else feel like the S2 Big Sky 4.5-14x44 with A/O is a flop of a scope and I should go with the Leupold ??
The Bell & Carlson Alaskan 2 stock is less expensive than most other stocks and it comes with a full aluminum bedding block.Will this stock be a good one??I have a friend that beds stocks so I would take it to him and have it skim bedded.Also I do my own scope mounting and set up and have been doing that ever since I started shooting. I have mounted my fair share of scopes and feel like I do a good job of it as I have never had any problems with any that I have mounted.
Also the rifle has only had 3-4 boxes of ammo shot thru it so the bore should be okay ,and I will have to see if I can find a good smith close to me and have the barrel recrowned

The Leupold scope has 71 moa windage and elevation and the Sightron has 80 moa windage and elevation.

Divided in half your only talking about at best 4-5moa of elevation. I'd go with the leupy.
