Defensive edge class

Last weekend Educ8r, southpaw and I took Shawn and Bob Carlock's (Defensive edge) long range shooting class. While there we met a great bunch of guys, including another LR member- BHHUNTER. BHHUNTER- it was a pleasure to meet you, and if you ever want to hunt Idaho, just say the word.
I have been going out on my own and doing a lot of shooting similar to what we did in class and by doing this have learned a lot. However, I cannot believe all that I learned in this class!
I learned a lot about shooting techniques etc, but the most important thing I learned is that the shooting part is easy. The reading of wind/mirage is the key to this whole thing. Even though I knew this going into it, I didn't fully understand it until I spent two days learning from the Carlocks. Both of these guys are unbelievably talented in this area and have a lot to teach.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to Shawn, and his dad Bob for all the work they put into this. These two guys work hard at what they do and their talents and abilities are second to none. Besides learning a lot, just being around these guys is a blast. This class was the most fun I have had in a long time.
If you're into this at all, I highly recommend taking this class.

I also took the class this weekend and will echo the above comments and then some. It was a great time spent shooting, meeting a bunch of good guys interested in long range hunting, and learning new things. Shawn and Bob did a great job and I would encourage anyone interested in long range shooting to attend. Even if you are proficient and experienced in long range shooting, I will bet you will learn something new and get some excellent practice.

We are full for 2010 and have 20+ people on the list for 2011. We set the dates in September or so and take tuition and slots after the dates are set.

I thought "the issue" was the knucklehead that was messing with his exbal validation. Oh wait a minute, that was me!

I had a great time and learned alot. For me I think the most important thing I learned was to practice enough in different conditions to know what my own abilities are so that I can make ethical shots at game.

I would rather mess w/ my validation than show up w/ a troubled gun I suppose..
It was impressive to see the difference in bullets bucking the wind also.

I took Shawn and Bob's class last year and it was a real eye opener. Right away that next week (and the rest of the summer) I went back to the hills and put several hundred rounds through the barrel to reinforce what they taught me.

I took those same techniques and taught my 15 yr old boy, that fall he dropped his first bull elk at 940 yards. Thanks Shawn & Bob!!!!!

And lastly, guys, I would strongly encourage ya'll to get out as soon as possible and burn some rounds.

That's good advice. I shot last night and will shoot again tomorrow. That's pretty impressive shooting for a youngster.

how did the shooting go? was the outcome any different with the class under your belt?

I was all set to go shooting thursday morning but then remembered that Shawn has my rifle!! he is putting on a new recoil pad and some flush cups. Ive got others, but its just not the same!

We went fishing this weekend on the river and southpaw and I spent lots of time looking through the spotting scope at mule deer on the opposite hillsides. We werent focusing on the mule deer though.. we were watching the mirage!! even though we didnt fire a shot, we studied the mirage speed, direction, and how often it changed etc. it was a blast!

You know you are addicted to this crazy stuff when you find yourself at family outings trying to guess the wind. One day at a barbq, I found myself sneaking off to my truck grabbing my kestrel just to find out if my guess on the 12 mph wind was on or not...It was ten I think, but close enough.

Not sure about Sat, work is slowing down for me on the rental rahab, so I just need to look at the schedule. I still want to do some loading this week.

Dave Viers got the initial test results published on the sniperhide forum today. Oh my Gosh, this 414 gr is accurate. He says it's the most accurate load he ever shot. He painted a 2 inch group today at 1150 yards....I cant wait for my new gun.

We snuck out last week for one day and set up for elk. Saw a ton of fresh, I mean fresh sign on a hillside we plan to shoot at. We can see 4 different hill sides ranging from 750 yards to 1,250 yards.

Just a back up place for elk that is a close drive. Now it's time to go find some more. This long range stuff should be illegal.

If you don't mind me asking which class did you take? The beginner or the advanced class.. Hope to book with Shawn for this fall, coming down from the great white north and not sure which I need to take!! Can't afford the 4 dayer this year!! Any input would be great!!

SBriggs: We took the first one. I believe it is a prerequisite to the advanced. You would have to check w/ Shawn, however. I also think he is full this year.
