Hello all, I am a proud new owner of some land in South Central Alaska off Prince William Sound.

A .300WM seems to be the norm here. The question is which rifle/scope for a 500 yard shot. I would like to start off at 500 yards and as my skills progress, I will start gun smithing and upgrading parts for longer shots. I need something really durable/reliable since the weather can be ugly and many miles from civilization.

I would like opinions on make and model for a rifle and scope.
$2k max budget enough?

I just picked up a Savage 116 Weather Warrior in 338 Win Mag as my AK rifle. Its one of the new ones with the Accu stock, Accu trigger, and a turn on turn off muzzle break. It has been working very well. Seems that it will hold up against the weather well also. I mounted a Huskemaw on mine, but that isn't really neccesary. A nice Leupold would work just fine.

If you want something really durable/reliable since the weather as you say can be ugly and many miles from civilization-(failure's not an option) the I'd go with a NF NSX 3.5-15, wide FOV and plenty x to 500 and beyond.

If you don't like muzzle brakes get a 338 win mag. If brakes are ok get a stainless 338 ultramag and brake it. It is the only rifle you will ever need for big game hunting. Alaska was made for 338's they are the all around caliber there.

338 Win Mag

The 300 Win Mag with good Prem 180gr bullets is very popular here in Alaska.

But the 338 Win mag with 225gr is what I use most.

A Win 70 with Mcmillian Stock and for the scope I use a Leupold 3.5x10 with the B&C reticle in Warne QR mounts. A real shooter out to 600 to 700 yards.

I handload my ammo with 225gr Nosler Accubonds and Reloader 19 @ 78.0
which gives me 2950 FPS. WW Brass and Fed 215GM primers.

After seeing the big costal brown bears the 338 Win seems even small.

Thanks for everyone's opinion. I can not wait to get up there!

Alaska, what handgun do you carry?

I would recomend a Remingtion 700 XCR in 338 RUM #27138 or #84529 (both rifles
cost $970.00) MSRP. A good scope would be around $600.00 (Leupold,Burris ETC)
In a 4.5x14x50.

These rifles have a synthetic stock and are stainless so they will work even in the worst
weather conditions.

The 338 RUM will kill anything in Alaska and will be the only rifle you will ever need.

They also make these rifles in the Win Mag.

Just a thought.
