Long jump to lands

I am loading 168g Berger VLD's in my 7mm RM hunting rifle (Rem 700 ADL)

I began seating the bullet at the max length that would reliably feed from my magazine.
Eventually, I was able to get decent accuracy with a jump of .142 from the lands. In fact, the accuracy was very consistant at this jump.

Now that i have a load that is fairly accurate (.73 MOA @ 100 avg) i have 2 questions

1. Is this jump harmful to my gun?
2. If not, at what jump distance if any, does it become harmful.

BTW i am still above the max listed 3.290 COAL listed in my Lyman manual

We have loaded for a 7 RUM ( Sendero) and the closest we could seat due to mag box length and a long throat was 1/4 inch and it still shot. These were the Barnes TTSX 150"s. I don't think you could seat a bullet that far into the cartridge case to make it a problem. Start around SAAMI specs and then lengthen so it still fits in mag box and shoots accurately...Bryan did an article on the "nodes" that the Bergers will shoot well. IF I remember correctly it was touching the lands and then shorten in .040 increments all the way to .120 off the lands...I agree with BoomTube. You never know for sure that one length will always work...experiment around and you'll find the key to that rifle, powder, primer, brass, bullet combo! Good luck 30-338

Thanks for the replies guys.

So there is no damage to the throat when a bullet has to jump long distances before it gets there?

You may want to try something like a 168gr match king or a 160 accubond So you can
get a little closer to the lands but still fit in the magazine.

Some bullets place you farther away from the lands, These two will solve this for you
and still fit in the mag.

Just a suggestion
