I have been looking at DPMS .308 rifles, anyone have one? How do you like it? I like the panther LR-308-L and the SASS. Going to be a target and hog/rifle. The price seems right if I can find one. Thoughts?

It's a good choice if you compare it to other 308 semi-auto rifles like the M1A, FAL, CETME, and HK 91. It's a AR-15 on steroids with the receiver assembly (mostly the bolt) weighting a pound more and about an inch longer. Barrels are typically heavier than AR-15 barrels but don't have to be. They use the same stocks and grips. The factory trigger is a mil-spec AR-15 trigger but it can be improved with an after market trigger to give lighter release, less over travel, and/or faster lock time.

DPMS offers (or has offered) the LR-308 in 243 Win, 260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, 300 SAUM, and 338 Federal. Each has it's advant ages for wind performance, recoil, and delivered. energy. The 6.5 Creedmoor and 300 SAUM offer the longest range, around 1400 yards supersonic. The latter with much more short range energy.

I suppose which is better for hogs would depend on what weight of hogs. Likewise for target shooting which is best depends mostly on the distance. The 6.5 Creedmoor will likely be the most accurate at 1000 yards or a kilometer if only for it's lowest wind deflection.

The LR-308 does not qualifiy for Service Rifle competition. Not all AR-15s and M1As do either. Check the rules for any type of formal competition. They're all fun plinkers, but what rifles aren't?

I use a 7.62x39 upper on my AR-15. It is a perfect hog gun and ammo is cheap and plentiful again, 20 rounds for around $5. Plenty accurate out to 200yds with cheap ammo, or 300 if you reload. And it is a lot lighter and cheaper than the .308. The only problem is there are no hi cap mags that work well. No, dont even mention C-Products. I use a DPMS plastic 10 rnd mag and it has never failed after over 1k rounds.

I used to have a DPMS 308B with the 18" heavy barrel. I replaced the trigger with a timney drop in and that rifle shot less than 1/2" at 100 yards with both federal gold metal match and black hills 168gr. The only reason I don't still have that rifle is because I sold it when I found out we were having our first baby for free up some $$. I was just getting into longer range shooting at the time and never shot it out past 700 yards, but it was very accurate even at that distance.

I would politely disagree on the magazines. Magpul has a 20rd Pmag out there now that gets incredible reviews and they are around $20 a piece without looking too hard.

Magpul does not make a 7.62x39 magazine.

A 308 is much like any other rifle in that barrel length affects velocity. It is not uncommon for 1K f-class rifles in 308 to have 28-30 inch barrels.

A pig doesn't much care how many 308 rounds you shot toward him, he only cares how many times you hit him and where.

What does 7.62.39 have to do with an LR-308 They're 7.62x51.
Magpul makes the PMAG 20LR, a 20 round 7.62x51 magazine for the Knights SR-25/M110 rifles. SR-25 magazines are supposed to be interchangable with DPMS LR-308 magazines, but I haven't tried the PMAG 20LR in LR-308s.

Pardon me. I was responding to teddy12b post. Try to following the thread.

I must have misunderstood your post. I thought you were mentioning the 7.62x39 as an example, then getting back onto the subject that we're talking about with the 308's.

I also thought when you said don't even mention Cproducts mags that you were refering to them because that's who makes them for the DPMS 308's and until magpul got into the game were the only other option for any DPMS 308 rifles.

The DPMS 308's magazines prices have been dropping like rocks since the pmags came out and I think that's a huge help to that system now that magpul has given them a competitor.

As far as 7.62x39 magazines go I'm not familiar with them at all and don't know what's available.

Sorry about the confusion. I was mentioning the 7.62x39 because shooting pigs was in the OP and the AR-15 with 7.62x39 upper is a great alternative to the .308 AR-25/AR-10 out to about 300 yds.

I wont interrupt anymore, carry on!

I'm glad I read this thread. I hadn't been aware of Magpul magazines for 308s. After reading it I called Magpul tech support and thy assured me that although it's designed for the SR-25 it's compatible with the LR-308.

So I ordered some Midwayusa. I don't expect them to be compatible with the 300 SAUM DPMS LRs and not sure about the 6.5 Creedmoor but I'll find out soon. I expect them to work with the 243 Win, 260 Rem, and 338 Federal which have about the same shape cases as a 308 Win. I'll find that out too.

The Magpul 20 round magazines arrived. They fit the LR-308 receivers nicely and fall free when the magazine release is pressed. The DMPS mags fall as freely.

The Magpuls fit to all of the 308 based cartridges IF the cartridge OALS are are no longer than the 2.80 SAAMI spec. That includes the 243 Win, 260 Rem, 308, and 338 Federal. There is very little additional clearance for length The 6.5 Creedmoor 140 grain AMax is right at the 2.80 limit (measured 2.7985), but it clears. The factory DPMS metal mags do have more clearance as they can handle handle 300 SAUM cartridgs which have a 2.825 SAAMI max length (Factory 190 grain Remington cartridges measure 2.8190 and they don't fit the magpul case for lengh. The DPMS mags can offer a littel advantage when trying to squeeze a bit more perfomance from VLD bullets. The magpuls dont seem to like the diameter ether. I didn't ry shorter 300 SAUM load because I don't have any made up. But then, no one said they should fit. The DPMS factory mags use a different plastic follower for the SAUM cartridges but it's the same metal for both. The DPMS SAUM follers wouldn't fit (or help) the Magpul magazines.

The Magpuls are lighter at 5.5 oz empy verssus 8.1 oz for the DPMS 20 round mag.

I haven't shot with the Magpuls yet but I don't expect a problem.
