Edge VS. RUM

I've got an old Magnum Sendero in 7MM RUM. The barrel never was a very good one and has gotten worse. I am entertaining the thought of going with a .338 cartridge in the new barrel.

Can anyone tell me why I should go with a 338 Edge as opposed to a 338 RUM? I'm never going to be shooting at game in excess of 1,000 yards.

Please be as detailed as you have time to be.

I would just go with the 338 RUM , I have both and the 338 ultra is close enough in performance that I would be happy with it alone. Then you don't have issues with overall length of the 338 edge,expensive dies, and can use brass that has the correct stamp. I think 1-10 twist would be perfect too,Krieger would be my first choice.

Last year I was facing the same question. I wasnt looking to shoot the 300 smk - i wanted to shoot the barnes 225 ttsx or 225 grain accubond bullets. Based on that I opted for the 338 rum. I do reload however I liked the availability of factory ammo if needed. I was also looking for a readily carriable hunting rifle with a 26" barrel. I had my gun build by Defensive Edge. Rem action, wyatts box mag, HS Precision stock, Hart #5 fluted barrel 26"' DE brake, Nightforce 2.5x10x32 scope. The gun came in right around 8.5 pounds plus scope. Very easy to carry. The DE brake makes the gun very comfortable to shoot.

Currently reloading H-1000, CCI 250 mag primers, Rem brass and Barnes 225 grain ttsx bullets. You can cover 5 shoots at 100yds with a dime. Have not had an opportunity to shoot further yet - hopefully very soon.

can someone confirm this for me a 338edge is a 300rum necked out 2 338 and a 338rum is a shorter case than the 300rum but factory?

in which case can i and has any1 sucesfully necked our 300 rum brass to 338 edge? thinking of going bigger in my sendero

sorry to digress its probaly more often than not up the the individual because i like the big cases and impressive look along with he ballistics but when the ballistics are similar 338edge-338rum the bigger cases wins every time 4 me

Yes, the Edge is simply a necked up 300RUM. It is about .09 longer than 338RUM.

Most people use 300RUM brass.

Have you chronographed your 338 RUM and the Edge, and can you tell me how much velocity difference you've see with which bullet?

A while back I was wondering about rebarreling my 338 Ultra mag to an edge, but I don't think 100 to 200 fps is going to make that much difference.
I didn't plan on shooting 300 grainers so I stuck with the 338 Ultra mag.
I just loaded up some 225 Barnes TTSX to see how they group.

The 338 RUM will do fine for Elk sized game at those distances with no problem.

My go to Elk rifle is a 338 RUM and I limit my shots for Elk to 1100 yards. (Energy,trajectory
accuracy and all of the factors that I like are met for successful hunts) But it will shoot/kill
beyond that distance if you want to push it,

The Edge will give you maybe 100 more yards, If you still want more then the 338/378 is better
than the Edge or the RUM, if you want "More power" then the Excalibur is a step up from the
338/378 in power.

There are always cartriges that out perform other cartriges if you are willing to pay the price
to use them so it becomes a personal choice based on its intended use, money to spend
and need.

In my opinion the 338 RUM will give you the best bang for your buck unless you want to shoot
300 gr bullets (I use 225s and 250s in my 338 RUM) for extreme distances.

Thanks, J. E. Custom. I've been shooting, hunting and reloading for almost 40 years now with 30 caliber or smaller rifles, and what you have stated is just exactly what I was thinking. BUT it is always very nice to have your thoughts confirmed by a knowledgeable person.

My only question about what you wrote is about the 300 gr. SMK or the new Berger bullet. Are you saying that you think the 338 RUM will shoot those two bullets with no problems but about 100 to 200 FPS slower?
