Leupold VX-3 with CDS system?

Anybody using the new Leupold VX-3 with the CDS system. I'm thinking hard about it and would like some info. The good the bad the ugly. Dose it have a zero stop? Any info would help. I'm set on getting a new scope. Thanks

I've been looking at that also. I called and they said it does have a zero stop and it can only turn one revolution, so say on a 30mm tube and say my 7mm Rem Mag I could get say 800 yards max. So, if you want more this is not the system for you.

And the knobs do not stick up as high as the M1 do.

I am planning on getting it in a few weeks.

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised more people are not running these scopes. I thought there would be more info out there. I'm thinking of putting it on my 7STW, I'm still not sure if it is what i want though. That explains why when you look in Leupold's specs the MOA is less on the CDS scopes.

The CDS dial is only good for 1 turn. so 600-700 yards max....

BUT...

You can get a M1 target turret and get the dial custom engraved that will go more than one turn. This can be done on VX I,II,and III scopes I think but they have to me modified to accept the turret.


I am looking at this system and putting feelers out.

In Canada Leupold has introduced a Leupold Canadian Model that is a VX-II with CDS.


Best to talk to custom shop and see all the options available.

I have the CDS set up on a 325 WSM, you can get it past one rotation, mine goes to 1000. they put the numbers above the lower ones. You can get it on any vary xIII. they take out ball detent, $90 for extra dials I think

i just ordered one from the custom shop, the reason being i don't plan on shooting past 600yds with my 22.250 or anything else for that matter.
lower profile + not getting lost spinning my turret is why i chose it.
to me 600yds is a LONG ways just my opinion

That is what else I REALLLY like is the profile is 1/2'' tall. I carry rifle in front w/safari sling and binocs in modified bino buddy type location off of my pack shoulder straps. Also can get standard MOA dial, which I have

Can someone advise me how to sight it in.
If I set the rifle up at 100 yards, do I set the CDS to 0 or 1.
Then if I want to shoot at 200 yds, do I just turn it up to 1 or 2.
Is the standard CDS dial that the scope comes with for a .270.
Help appreciated.

The standard markings from Leupold are MOA (roughly 1.047" at 100 yards.MOA). If you contact Leupold, and tell them your loading data, they will custom make a turret that is roughly calibrated for your rifle. You could also just use the MOA turrets and then figure out what the corrections are for your load (like the JBM online ballistics computer). And yes, if you want a custom turret made, you will probably have to chronograph your hunting loads in your rifle.

The other option is to zero your rifle at 100 yards, and then reset the turrets to "0". At this point, shoot at 200 yards, and figure out how much you need to correct the elevation to hit dead on. Do the same for 300, 400, etc. and record all of those setting. Tape them to the inside of your scope caps ...

You can get a cap without the zero stop so you wouldn't be limited.

The factory ones come with a zero stop, but again you can call and get one without or if your having one installed you can also either get it with or without (or so I've been told)

I've got one in right now being retrofitted, 4.5-14 LR

I love the Leupold and the CDS is a great feature but for me I would keep it in MOA. The problem with the drop built into the knob is your load will vary with temperature and elevation and over time sometimes I change loads or move scopes around. Then the custom knob is worthless. I have a $110 Kenton knob hanging in my safe that I can no longer use because I switched to 210 grain Bergers.

Anybody need a VX-3 LR target knob set up for the 200 grain Accubond at 3100fps, 750' elevation at 55 degrees?
