Hello everyone,

I have a bit of a scope delema. Here's what's going on:
I have 3 rifles, 2 scopes and $580 dollars to get a third one.
I am open to all suggestions such as sell X or Y and buy A B and C or just buy one or whatever mix an match you think is best.

Here is the intended uses for each rifle:

1. Custom .308win for casual F-class, practice, and medium range hunting (to 600yards).

2. Savage M116 300 win mag normal non-lr hunting rifle. For hunting in the woods in VA, not needed to shoot more than 400. Sort of my truck gun.

3. Custom 300 wby imp dedicated LR rifle for 600+ big game and varmints as far as I can spot them.

I have two scopes currently. A falcon menace 4-14x44 ffp mildot and a 1981 leupold vx-3 3.5-10x40 no turrets. Plus $580 set aside for a third scope.

I'm open to ANY suggestions. Am thinking about getting M1 turrets and maybe even a tmr reticle put in the vx-3 as it seems like a good match for my 300 win mag. If needs be the 300 win mag doesn't need a scope right now as it won't get much use for the next months, till some hog hunting in June.

Thanks for your help,
Oliver

also if your interested in buying the falcon, send me a pm with an offer.

You can probably buy bushnell 4200 elite tactical with your 580.00, I had one one 338 rum it was goor out to ~1300yds. I think it is a very goor scope for the money.

Vintec,

I have also been looking into the bushnell 4200s, is the glass any different in the 3200s or just cheaper because of the smaller magnification range?

im 75 years old and have been hunting long range exclusivly in the steep mountains of n.c. pa. for about 40 years.
you dont have a problem unless you think you do, or worse allow somebody else make you think that.
some of us drive to work in a b.m.w. and some of us make it there somehow in a used chevy.
thats not knocking the beemer, but you get my point.
last fall i thought i was having a problem with one of my 12x leupolds.
i hurredly went to a store and bought a new 4/16 nikon, 50mm side focus.
$485 in a store mind you. i also bought new rings for it and mounted it on a 20# 30x378.
what a great scope, and at a very good price.

since then ive bought another 12x leupold on ebay. looks like new, no ring marks, target knobs and a.o. for $315.
i now have 3 of those, so ask me how i like them.
by all means put the knobs on the 3.5x10 for less than $200.

if somebody wants to spend a thousand, or several thousand dollars for a better scope thats fine. but the fact is there are quite a few very good ones for far less. especially if your willing as i am to buy used.

remember this, just 20 years ago nobody ever even heard of some of the products many now think absolutly necessary to have. scopes are one of them. there have been very successful long range hunters for a helluva lot longer than that.

If your interested I know of a guy that is trying to sell 8-32X50 nikon monarch with BDC recticle for $550 and he is only about 1 1/2 hours from where you are located.

JMUPT,

thanks for the offer. Just looked at some specs and it looks like a nice scope. But 1/8moa clicks and only 20moa of internal adjustment are a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for the offer JUMPT.

The more im looking the more the vortex viper 6.5-20x44 is standing out. Now if i could get one of those used.... It has a good amount of internal travel, magnification range im looking for, price is good, and am hearing pretty much only positive stuff about them.

Yobuck,
im having trouble with nikons website... how much travel does the nikon 4-16 have? im worried because it's a 1" tube. I have the monarch 56mm binos and the glass is awsome!! I can see over 100yards further at night looking through them than with my eyes during a good moonlight night.

EDIT: ok i found the scope on nikon's website. Your right, the 4-16 is 1/4moa click. But still only 50moa of internal adjustment. so on a 20moa base that would give me about 40ish if im lucky. For comparison the viper has 68minutes. But more importantly, how is the nikon glass? becuase elevation doesnt help if you cant see what your shooting at :D

Oliver,

IMO the glass is better in the 4200 vs the 3200, But I can not tell alot if any difference between the 6500 and 4200

save your nickels and dimes and buy a top of the line scope. I know a guy that might be selling a MK4 as he's considering upgrading to NXS :)

I agree with the other guy that said just take your 580 and buy a Bushnell 4200 6x24 tactical. I just bought one for 550 and put it on my 7mm STW. Great glass , I compared it side by side with a Mk 4 , and has enough adjustment with a 20 moa base to get me to 1300 yards. I think its a great LR scope for the money.

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered a 6-24X50 sightron SIII LRMD. Got a great deal and couldn't resist. Read so many good reviews, just had to try one. I'm thinking I will put the sightron on the 300 ackley mag and will see what I do with the falcon. It will go on the .308 for the time being and the VX-3 on the 300 win mag.
