How far with 180 grains and a 300 rum?

I have been trying to get my 300 rum to shoot 200 ab and 210 bergers. But its not going to happen, It loves 180 ab. So my question is how far can you shoot an elk with 180 ab. What is the longest shot you would take?

It depends on an awful lot of things including the shooters ability, optics, knowing the exact range, weather conditions and a host of other things. Having said that, the round and bullet combination is capable of killing an elk at 1000 yds. I would caution that the accubond will not expand reliably at velocities under 2000 ft/sec ,however!....Rich

If I'm not mistaken Nolser has posted on their web site the minimum velocity for the Accubond to expand properly is 1800 fps. Using the info on Noslers website an 180gr Accubond with a BC of 507 and a muzzle velocity of 3225 slows to that at about 825 yards. If you consider the established ft-lb of energy it takes to sub do an animal the size of an elk (1500 ft-lbs) then with the 180gr you would max out at about 725 yards. The numbers above are at sea level. So with altitude it gets better.

I have seen elk taken with a lot less than the 1500 ft-lbs rule but would take Noslers advice on how their bullets perform and their limits. As elkaholic says there are a lot of variables and everyone needs to work their way up and find their own limits.

I would keep foolin around with the 200gr as it will perform better. Good luck.

What twist is your BBL ? If you have not tried 190 bergers and retumbo do try. What disatance did you try to group the 210's ? Some guys have noticed the beregers dont go to sleep till 250-300 yards. Mess with seating. I found a good node in my rifle at 3.70 " 100 yard groups are 1" .. same at 300 yd. Dont forget the 185 bergers too.

Conservatively, at elk altitude the 180 AB starting at 3200 FPS still has over 1800 FPS and over 1300 pounds at 1K. This is at a reduced BC and the lower elevation limit for elk of 6000'. Some elk will be found lower but not many. This is of course with the western states in mind. Elk are tough but with a high shoulder shot theyre not going anywhere. IMHO, the 200 AB is only marginally better. I had the same issue with both of my 300 RUM's. They loved the 180 AB's and only tollerated the 200 AB's. One with a 12x barrel and one with a 11.25x barrel. Both would shoot the 200 AB's at .5 MOA where both shot the 180's at .25 MOA.

You might want to consider the 168 grain Etip over the 180 accubond. The BC on the bullets are almost identical but the 168 should be able to be lauched around 100 fps faster which means flatter trajectories and less wind drift.

The higher velocities downrange of the Etip and near 100% weight retention should mean good terminal performance also. At 900 yards the 168 etip is still travelling at over 2,000 fps at 5,000 ft elevation

If you have a minimum of 1-10 twist you can run the GS Custom HV hunting bullet at apx 3500fps and carry down range farther than anything else in a hunting bullet. Well past 1000 yrds.

Not sure about the GS bullets but on the powders all are good choices with Retumbo giving the best velocities and accuracy in my rifles. T870, which is the same as the old H870 is available from Thunderbird cartridge co. in Az. and will give better velocity than ANYTHNG........Rich

I plan on trying the GS HV 177's in my 300 RUM. With that bullet, a little faster powder than Reumbo will probably work better, such as H1000. Retumbo was my go to powder for 180 E-Tips, 200 AB's and 210 Bergers. H1000 was right there with it, but I liked the Retumbo results a little better in *my* rifle. The GS bullets will fly faster with less pressure and my do very well with RL17. I would expect to see 3500 - 3550 with H1000 and maybe up to 100 fps more with RL17. There would be nothing in the 30 cal world that could match that performance if it happens... 3600-3650 fps with a .6 plus BC. This is just "educated" speculation, but I think it's doable.

I have tried RL17 with 180 E-Tips in my 300 RUM and matched Retumbo and H1000 velocity. If you want to try it with the GS bullets, 80 grs would be a good place to start. I found max @ 87 gr and 180 E-Tips with my rifle. I suspect it would be a little higher with the GS bullets.

400 meters with 180 tsx @ 3180fps with rl-25 n 88.0 grs on a moose now switched over to the 168 tsx @ 3368 with 94 grs of rl-25

My gun is a sendero 300RUM, after seeing everything I have on bergers I knew they were the bullet for me, now it was just whether my gun would shoot them? My wifes 300SAUM loves 150gr accubonds. I started out with 185gr bergers, then went to 190's and settled in with the 210gr bergers. I must say all along I have been hung up on speed, but kept telling myself speed is not as the best or the most accurate, with that said I started messing around with my bullet seating depths. With the 185's and 190's they seem to like being seated around .020 off the lands, the 210's seem to like .030 off the lands. Now I have only shot out to 100 yards with my load development, thou I did shoot a popcan at 600 yards with a 190gr berger.
But I like the idea of the high BC of the 210's and them being less effected by the wind then a lighter bullet. With a friends chrono I am getting right around 3100 fps with the 210's and retumbo powder, also had good results with H1000 powder and RE22 powder. But I think as retumbo is the most temp stable powder I am going to stick with it. I am waiting for the gunsmith to finish my gun, had the trigger lightened up and a wyatt extended box magazine put in and then I want to put a nightforce rail on it and get rid of the dual dovetail rings. Once hunting season gets here I should have a gun that will be accurate to 1000 and maybe beyond. Good luck with your development.

I was given a small number of the 177 grain GS bullets for testing in my 300 ultra's. I was getting good accuracy with them at 3515 fps. With the high BC they carry this is one of the best long range killers in the business. The only thing I saw is they do not open up as well as I hoped they would at slower velocities. They are a monometal bullet and will not come apart though which is a huge plus. I did not see the huge double caliber type mushrooms of the Barnes bullets but they did seem to be adequate for hunting. I used Retumbo, RE25 and H-870.
