I'm thinking of getting a A5 stock for my 338 edge but was wondering if you can get a detachable magazine for it with new bottom metal.

None that I'm aware of.

Other more salty Wby guys should weigh in here to make sure.....I'd drop these Wby guru's a PM to make sure.....TRGRMAN, JE Custom, Broz, specweldtom, Magnus.

The best option I'm aware of is the factory "378 Wby" center feed internal box which measures at approx 3.815 from front to rear. Most will load at a lesser length to ensure proper function...say 3.808 or less. This box may require some gunmithing to fit/operate properly in your action, depending if it started out as a .540 bolt face or was a 378 based case to begin with.

For bottom metal, you can order from Wby, specifically from their custom shop, a product that is called a "drop box kit". This is a one piece bottom metal, that allows for +1 of internal mag capacity with the above center feed mag, and a flat center feed mag follower. This will come with a flat mag center follower. It protrudes a little farther down than the factory metal and looks like:

That above pic is borrowed from Magnumdood at weatherby.dk

You could make the factory metal work with the Center feed box, but you might only get 2+1 on capacity with the Center feed box and factory bottom metal. Since your looking for a DBM, I'm assuming capacity is important to you.

The part numbers:

Box, Magazine Large Caliber: 6816
Drop Box Kit: CBA2038
Flat follower: I don't have the part number for that handy...sorry.

Hope that helps.

Parts list that was used to take a .540 bolt face Mark V Weatherby action to a .580 bolt face.

Drop box kit still uses a hinged floor plate, but add one to the internal capacity.

And this is what the bottom metal looks like on a rifle. Good luck!

Autorotate is the MAN!

I was looking for a magazine solution for a Mk 5 with a 378-size round and found this post.. the Wby listed dealer didn't have a clue and never mentioned the drop box.

I'm brand-new green in the long range world and there are no smiths in the area that work on target rifles.

The custom shop guy was great at Weatherby... Rodney set me up with the parts you listed.. especially, the large caliber extractor to use when the boltface gets opened up.

I just started reading LRH, so it will take a few months to get myself oriented here. Again, thanks for the answer to the question I had on making room for the big boomers!

Autorotate,

Tell me about the stock and the scope mount. Is that a 20 slope on the scope mount?

I looked for stocks, but they are all for the brand X actions. Was this a Weatherby inlet to begin with? What else did you do to it?

Bell Carlson Tactical stock part # 6629-## (##=color code). Same stock used on the Weatherby Threat Response Custom rifle that Weatherby offers from the factory custom shop. No special inletting required, other than the barrel channel. Barrel channel is inletted for a Weatherby #4 contour, which is somewhere around a Light Palma contour. The barrel you see on that rifle is a Brux Heavy Palma with a 3" shank. Weighs 4.4 lbs. Adjustable everything, tough as a brick.

Near 20 MOA mount, you're absolutely right on the slope. Arguably the finest bases you can buy for any rifle, and one of the few that makes one for the Weatherby Mark V action. His bases come machined for 5 attachment screws, but you can of course just use 4 if you don't have/desire to have your receiver machined for the 5th attachment screw.

Just updated my MK V to 338 norma. It is sitting in an A5, Near Alpha bases and rings(30 moa base with 20 moa rings for 50moa total!! Richard is all I have used for the last 3 years. His bases and rings especially are without question the best I have ever used!) 30" Schneider 9 twist with M40 contour, Tubb break and level, Nightforce 5.5-22x56. Just waiting for brass....I think after seeing this post I will opt for the mag extension!

Autorotate,
Is that your rifle pictured? If so, what caliber are you shooting, what glass do you have on it and how much does it weigh?

Yep, that's mine. 338 Excalibur. The average case capacity in grains of water from the once fired cases with a spent primer seated in reverse is 140.1 grains. Built by a very knowledgeble/capable expert smith on here. It wore a S3 6-24x50 Sightron, but another optic is going on it. Don't hold me to it as I can't touch the rifle at the moment, but I think this came in right around 15.5 lbs with that optic. I need to post a rifle build thread on that rifle. Hopefully APS or somebody sources some economical brass for the chambering and breathes some new life into the round. This chambering made me skip the 338 Cheytac chamberings, and have 375 Cheytac Improved built instead. Certainly not claiming it's in the league of those rounds, but the accuracy load was 122 gr of H50BMG pushing a 300 SMK at 3070-3082 fps out of a 31.25 9.8 tw Brux. My goal was 3100+ with the 300 SMK. Probably could get there with a bit more load development, but didn't want to eat up the barrel chasing 25 fps.

Autorotate, what kind of brake are you using?

Also, would you send me a private message on who your builder is, if you don't want to publish it here?

He would have all the setup necessary to do a MKV thead and chamber, since he already did yours...

I'm basically copying your rifle.
