Barrel Tuners and Load Developement

My rifle is currently a Browning A-Bolt with a BOSS system on the end. Seemed like a good idea at the time because I was young and never counted on reloading and tuning to factory rounds seemed like a good idea. However, now I've started to reload with my quest for accuracy and to have always available ammo. It's also a lot of fun to do and a good reason to shoot more.

My question is, what's your favorite method for finding the best load for a rifle with a tuner on the end of the barrel? Do you set it at a known spot, work up a load and then tune? Find a load with good velocity and low ES then tune for that load or what? I'm open to any and all suggestions. Currently I'm trying the factory settings for a bullet weight and working up from there, but I'm wondering if there's better ways out there.

Thanks,
Chris

I am no expert in load development, but when my A-Bolt was a 223 BOSS I set it middle range and worked up best load I could. Then I turned the tuner about a 10th turn & shot 300yd groups. I got lucky as hell because the groups shrunk bigtime right off the bat. Then I turned it half as much both ways, and saw groups open both ways. Set it back where it shot best & never messed with it again.
Definitely one of the most accurate barrels I've owned. Killed hundreds of woodchucks with it.
But it was also one of the loudest barrels ever. If it had a BOSS now, it would be the non-brake version.

Sounds like you did what I did. I picked the factory setting for the bullet weight I wanted to use and then worked up a load. After I had a good group I played with the BOSS and ended up back at the setting I started with. I guess that means you and I got it close enough to just right so any changes put us farther from perfect than we began at. What groups did you get your rifle?

I didn't know if there would be a more idea way of doing it over how we did. Hearing how many ppl here shoot target I didn't think I'd be the only one with an adjustable tuner.

I know how you feel about the noise. I ordered the non-ported one from Browning because of that. A 270win doesn't kick that hard anyways.

Hot barrel grouping was typical 3/8 to 1/2moa bipod shooting. But more important, cold barrel ACCURACY was better than 1/4moa.
That is, my first shot could be counted on as within 1/4moa from center of mark. So at 300, I could pull it out, drop it on it's bipod in the dirt, hit a 1" dot with one shot(no sighters, fouling, warming, etc) & put it back.

All you could ask for woodchucks to 600 in 223.

But I screwed up the barrel in an accident. Rebarreled in 6br with a Pacnor.
Now it hot groups 1/4moa, but can't be counted on to produce any real accuracy in the field.
I need to rebarrel again with something cut-rifled, and my next barrel regardless of gun will have a BOSS tuner. IMO, nobody knows tuners better than Browning at this point, and their tuner is better than anything others have come up with.

Ceck out the Time Precision Supertuner. I have 3 of them. One of them I can use on several different guns. Just switch from one gun to the next and dial in the pre-determaned setting.

Well, something I forgot to mention is that the BOSS system includes a special bedding(rubber).
I believe this is very important, as described in their patent.
