Will a 1:10 twist stabilize the 300gr smk and why is everyone using 1:9.3 twist?

I've had two different edges w/10 twist barrels they both shot them good. I'd imagine everyones going to the faster twist for the wildcat bullets.

The 1 in 10 twist is the best all round twist for 200 gr to 300 grain bullets, But if you are
only going to shoot 300 grain bullets then the 1 in 9.2 ,9.25 or 9.5 would 'probably" be
better. (No proof of that just a hunch)>

If you are planning to build a monster 338 (Excalibur or bigger the fast twist is not nessary).

With a .338 Edge or similar I think you will have no problems out to 1500 yards with a 1 : 10 twist and the 300gn SMK.

We use a 1:10 on a 338 Lapua using 300grn SMK's. No problems with stabilization so far. I know it is not a far shot, but I picked an empty shotgun shell off of a backstop this past weekend at 100yrds through the middle dead center with the described rifle and bullet above.

This is only my opinion so take it with a grain of salt but I wonder how much of this 9.2, 9.3, 9.whatever stuff comes from some of these computer software programs that you input the information and it calculates "the perfect" twist rate.

I am always open for something better but when you have guys like Shawn Carlock, Kirby Allen and Dan Lilja all saying 1-10, well, that's good enough for me.

My 338 Lapua has a 10 twist lilja 27 1/2". All I shoot is 300 smk's. Yesterday I was tsesting a new scope for it. 8-32 x 56 NXS. I only shot 1 three shot group at 1008 yards. pic below. I would rather be lucky than good. But the two previous groups I shot at this same target were 3 shot groups that all 6 fell into 5" shot on two different days. So I say the 10 twist is fine with 300 SMK's. But if you would ever want to go with longer custom bullets a 9.5 would probably be better. I should also say I have shot a 36" gong at 2100 yards with this rifle and was pleased with the number of hits.

I was wondering if the 9.3 twist would help going through the transonic and may lessen the effects you saw at 2285 yrds.
A good share of the 338 Norma Mags I have read about, which seems to be designed around the 300SMK, run the 9.3 twist.
Granted that this would be out of the norm for most shooting.

The higher the BC the tighter the required twist will usually be. There will be some new high BC bullets coming along requiring a 9 twist or better, If you want to take advantage of them, then you'll need the appropriate twist. If I get a barrel chambered for 338 it will be a 9 twist if not an 8. I am waiting to see what happens in Las Vegas next month and see what Noel Carlson is offering.
