Thinking about rechambering a 300 win mag I have into a 30/375 Ruger using the following reamer
30_375_Ruger.jpg

The case capacity of the 300 win mag is 87 grs and the 30/375 Ruger will be 93.6 grs. The reamer should clean the chamber up but the barrel may have to be set back a thread or two.

The advantages are that it will get rid of the belt and the inordinate amount of head clearance on new cases that the 300 win mag has (presently .019" with Nosler brass). The additional 6.3 grs of capacity should enable loading the 200 gr bullets to an honest 3000 fps and the 180 gr to 3200 fps, which is all but undoable with 300 win mags. Should still be able to shoot it without a muzzle brake which is impossible for me with the 300RUM (over 110 gr capacity).

The rifle I have is an 8 pound rifle with a 24" Lothar Walther barrel.

The biggest problem is dies. I can have dies made once I have a fire formed case but getting there is the problem. I suppose I can neck down the original 375 Ruger cases with a 300RCM neck die and once I have a fire formed case then I can send to Lee and Redding for a Collet Die and Body Die.

Any other suggestions?

You will be very close to the Dakota case. It should be a good one. If you have a reamer spec sheet, you can have Lonnie Hummel at Hornady make some custom dies without having to wait for a fire formed case. I have done that and it will save you a lot of time. It will probably take you about 5 months to get the dies after ordering. He can also make a hydro case forming die from the same specs. Call him and talk to him. He is very knowledgeable and a great guy....Rich

+1 on prints to dies with either Hornady or ch4d. Once you firm the print and authorize the making of the reamer. Send that print to whomever you choose to make the sizing die and they will take it from there.

Your reamer is in between the two that I have, both of them have .338 necks. You know you will need to turn necks with that reamer.
I don't know if you have seen Ray Prager's posts on this website but I believe he is using a standard 375 Ruger die for a body die and a 338 RCM die for neck sizing and bullet seating for his 338-375 Ruger. That may be another option.
I had a resize reamer made to make my own FL resize die for mine.

I looked at the 300 Dakota. It has 97 gr capacity which would be another step up. The bolt face might need some work from .532" to .545" and the neck/shoulder junction is .110" shorter than the 300 win mag and the 30/375 Ruger is only .0163" shorter so the setback would be less.

More dies though.

Does anyone know what the shoulder angle is on the 300RCM? Steve's pages doesn't show it and the 4D reamer site doesn't either, but I think it is 36* which is different than the 375 Ruger. If so then you are probably right on sizing the case body and pushing the shoulder back with the 375 Ruger die, which I have.

Will there be any problem necking down from 375 to 30 caliber with the 300RCM neck die? Any crinkling or folding on the neck? I do anneal, neck turn and have a 30 caliber reamer.

The chamber reamer can be rented from 4D http://4-dproducts.com/display.php?group=Rifle+Calibers

I would think you might need to neck down to .338 first and then .308?

That would mean getting a 338RCM neck die and a 300RCM neck die?

The .361 bushing in my Redding neck sizer 338RUM die collapses the neck on the 375 Ruger, so I would have to start higher with 35 caliber bushings to even have a chance of downsizing the neck.

Guess I will get a 338RCM and 300RCM neck sizer and give it a try before I go much farther.

I haven't tried that particular caliber, but have had issues when trying to size down too far with others. You might want to hear from someone who has gone that route...Rich
