howdy, Have bean using a 700 bushnell and it works good to 600ish, need to stretch that out with an upgrade. Do not want bells and whistles! just yards, meters and scan all these range finder threads turn into leica or sworowsky adds and never really answer the question. with ONLY the options of a bush 1500 for $300 or nikon 1200 camo for $330 what would you do? Thanks

I have been using the Bushnell 1500 Elite for some time. It is within 3 feet plus or minus out to 1760....confirmed. Remember that what ever you carry into the field could get lost or misplaced. For the cost, the Bushnell 1500 Elite is very well fitted to the purpose. May I suggest a Night Force NXS 8x32x56 with the NPR2 reticle? You can "range" targets without the use of battery operated systems. This means less weight and fewer things to have to look after.

What were you ranging that it picked up from that far away? Mine has picked up 1200 while mounted on a tripod in near perfect conditions...
It was a 22 ton machine called a "compactor" at the land fill about one mile from my back door. Great "hood" that I live in!! I ranged some garbage trucks enroute to the "spot" and had several that came in at about 1620 to 1685. It is 1762 to the very top(a canister) and we got the same reading from a Leica 1200. The Leica read the same which speaks volumes for that product. The difference in range finders is not the beam but the amplitude of power generated from the unit itself. Check it out. It's on the "net". I'm not saying it was easy. You must hold the RF just as steady as you would a rifle scope and the target must deflect the laser beam back to you. I used a tripod. Dirt is the worst as well as water. Trees might work but the best bet is something that can bounce the beam back to your position. Even when using something metalic it is critical to get into a 90 degree or flat trajectory or the beam will deflect elsewhere. I use my Night Force scope and it does well if you are familiar with the math at ranging. You must have a "given height or width" to use the NF scope for ranging.

lets see now, a nightforce scope and a bushnell rangefinder would be what, little over $2000?
a swarovski rangefinder and a leupold scope would be what, maybe a little less? guess what im doing.

There ain't no telling. Probably looking at prices. Me? I'm talking to my woman and need to get off line. See you later J.D.

I tried every suitable model that was available locally before buying a Swaro. I tested them outside the stores in bright light and low light. If I couldn't get the Swaro, I would just get the Elite. I'd even take the Elite over the Leicas. For some reason the Leica 1200 just had a hard time at 1000 yards, whereas the Swaro and Elite would provide a reading with every press of the button. The downside to the Elite is the dim glass, but with the money saved versus the Swaro you could buy a decent pair of binos.

The Elite is good to go in my opnion. But remember that no rangefinder will work 100% of the time. I can range a treeline at 2000 yards with my Swaro, but it doesn't care for fog one bit. We just have to know the limitations of our gear.

I have the Nikon 1200. Mine is fairly reliable out to 800 yds and that is about it when attempting to range in the dirt, sage brush, and mountian slopes in the areas I hunt. Sometimes it will go further if used from a very steady rest. This has worked for me, as I have never taken anything down beyond 500 yds.

I get trigger happy - dump a smaller buck only to have a big guy stand up after the shot. Maybe some day I will learn my lesson...

If you are interested in purchasing one, I would let mine go for $225. Send me a PM if interested.

Howdy , I went with the bushnell back in march and have bean very happy with it and it works great out to 1300 or so easily with duracell or energizer batteries, won't range 250 with cheap batteries, that being said if a bad car reck had not ruined my year and my finances I would buy your nikon for my wife I.E. my back up....damb kid in a hotel shuttle van lost it on the freeway hit the barricade three lanes to my right overcorrected and shot out north across the east bound lanes in heavy traffic I didn't get line of site until he was coming straight accross the lane next to me and I had cars on both sides...T-BONED I never even made it to the brakes and someone else hit him head on after he landed totaled all three vehicles and since then 18G+ in medical and 6400+ in wages has made for a rough year................................................................................................... Regarding your dear habit :My wife's uncle (my hunting partner) has decided from now on before shooting anything other than an obvious trophy buck or bull he is going to shoot the ground in front of it and wait for the big one to step out. Guess your not the only one:D.

Sorry to hear about the personal injuries you suffered as a result of careless driving. But from the sounds of things, 2010 is going be much better.

Hello, I've owned a leica 800 lrf (old model) for eight years. It is used hard. The only time I've had a problem is during harvest (dust) even then I always could get at least 700, last week it got 3 ranges on a hill near a coyote at 907yds and off a hard target (building) I've gotten over 1000. I recently upraded to a swaro because I needed more distance and because for bow hunting it has way better glass when you don't want to drag your bino's stalking mules. I know a lot of guys with the nikons all models "junk" have had no experience with the bushnells. But I think if you look you can still find some of the LRF lieca's for around $400-$500 New.
