Well saturday was a good day, especially for hunting here in the east. the sweet part was that Me & my hunting buddy killed 4 coyotes on 3 stands I killed one on the second, then that evening he went out solo & got into a nice pack & took 3 of them before he left. a pair that came in together then a solo dog that showed up right before dark. all 4 of these died to house cat distress calls from a foxpro cs-24. Now for the bitter part, the first stand. we were set atop a hillside over looking a small creek bed running from our left to right, with a thicket to the left, & the rest of the country wide open. we could see a little over 600 yds. across the gully to the top of the hill, & probably 2000 yards to our right. well, after about 10 minutes of calling, I spot a pair on the far hill to the right barrelling across the hill from our right to left thinking any second there going to turn & head down the hill toward the caller so we would have about a 225 yard shot. not! they lock up across the hillside across from us & just sit there, looking down the hill & not budging. I whisper over to chuck, "get the range finder." he digs it out & gives me a reading of 356. I look at chuck & say "can I try him?" before I can get dialed in, the decide to get out of town. as they trot away I just happen to notice a a light colored spot just about 75 or so yards up the hill from where those two were just sitting. I crank up the power to see another coyote just laying down, gazing around with out a care in the world. My rangefinder couldn't give me a reading off of him but it did give me a reading off of a clump of tree's just behind him. I get a reading of 449 yds. I've been waiting for this moment, since I had my rifle built. a 700 short action, blueprinted, lilja#7 cut at 26in. chambered in .204, jewell trigger set at 1lbs. sitting in a bedded HS varmint stock, with a nikon monarch ucc 6.5x20 with a fine cross hair sitting on top. It's been shooting well under 1/2 moa(under ideal conditions of course) with 40gn v-max's behind 30 grains of bl-(c)2. so, back to the hunt. about that time this yote gets up & starts a slow walk to his left up the hill. chuck tells me to give hi a whirl. I crank the scope up to 20, adjust parallax to 400, crank in a 4 1/8 moa come up to put me spot on at 425 with no wind, (since he was just out in front of the clump of tree's) & wait for him to stop. I'm trying to get comfy with the rifle, resting on a pair of poll cat shooting sticks, I'm sitting in a ground level turkey hunting seat that allows me to rest my trigger arm on my knee. I get steady & chuck lets out a long howl on the cs-24 & he turn, stops & looks, i send one, holding right on his shoulder, BANG FLOP!!!!!! were slapping high fives, when chuck sais, " you better put another one in him" at that moment he gets on his feet & heads to the thicket to our left. after making stand number two & killing one, we head back to look for him & never even find a speck of blood. while I was pumped at the fact I had connected with my first long range dog(for me that is) I was just a little bummed that I didn't get to put my hands on him. But over all a pretty good day, shooting 5 coyotes, with 4 recovered. that doesn't happen here in kentucky that often.
