i just built a rem 300 ultra and im starting to load up hunting loads. looking in the 200 gr range and was woundering if the 208 gr amax hornaday was a good bullet for hunting or just a good paper puncher. the other bullets that im going to play with is berger 190 and accu bond 200

It depends on what type of game and what velocities.

The 208 AMAX bullet work well on game provided the game is light boned and you dont hit them with hyper velocity speeds. That said, I would not trust them on elk or larger at close range but would consider them for the longer ranges after the bullets have slowed down as there is alot of material and mass there. For deer size critters, they are thin skinned and light boned as well as narrow enough so that in case the bullet comes completely apart, they still do a great job of cleanly killing them.

For elk and larger out to 800+ the 200 AB is a great choice for your caliber.

Been there done that. To thin a jacket for anything but deer size stuff. They will not hold together for hunting. I had a great load worked up for my 300 ultra at over 3200 fps. After a couple of animals I realized they will not hold together.

"After a couple of animals I realized they will not hold together" Were the animals dead?

PS I've never had an animal run away to were I couldn't find it the AMAX blows up and the animal is dead as 4 o clock. I've shot elk and mule deer with 155grain AMAX so I'm sure the 208 would do the job as well !

Think of it this way an exsplosive big game bullet:D
