yotes- 6-18x40 or 4-12x50 ?

I recently bought a 22-250 and now I have to choose the right scope for it. My lack of experience brought me here. The rifle will be use for coyotes mostly. Some target shooting but this is not why I bought the gun. Since the 22-250 is not legal for big game ( deer) I'll use my .270.

Where I hunt in Canada, most of the hunting is done in the fields with a wood neer buy. Shots are usually between 50 and 200 yrd MAX (for coyotes) My .270 have a 1.5x6 scope and I barelly use it over 4x. Most of my deers were killed at 3-4x.

I'm worried that buying a 18x scope will only lead me to some too big optic, for relativly close shots. Do I settle for 4-12 taking advantage of the 4x and the bigger opening/ more lights? Or stick with the 6-18 ?!| Perhaps you have other scope suggestions for my kind of setup/varmint

any comments are appreciated.

The 4-12 would be my choice, I don't see any need for more than 12X..that's just me. What brand scope are you thinking?

4-12 would be a better choice. Since your shots are relatively close range the 4 power would work out well. Heck for 5-200yds a 3-9 would be a great choice.
It's amazing how quickly coyotes can get up on you and a low power scope with a large field of view is the most usable optic.

I also have a 22-250 (Tikka T3 lite) as a first rifle and I (over?) equipped it with a Leupold VX-II 6-18 x 40mm. Being new to the game and not really knowing the wisdom of the clear, lower powered optics, I opted for a bit more power than I ought to have. Hindsight being well, hindsight, if I had it to do over again I think I'd have opted for a high quality, fixed power scope.

I love the quality of the Leupold. In fact, I have a second one on order, a VX3 (for a Savage .308). I have found in my limited experience, that for the light hunting rifle that I have (Tikka T3 lite, 22-250 1:14 twist), I tend to shoot better with the scope on its lowest power. It's really more scope than I need on this rifle (for what I do: paper punching out to 300 yards). For me, looking back, a good fixed power scope would have sufficed.

Make sure you get the eye relief you need, I like more than 3" er.
Some vari from low to high power more than others.

With those qualifications in mind i'd consider the 2-7x Burris Timberline (at only 9.5" long), maybe with Ball. Plex reticle if u have any considerations of going to longer ranges.
