I tried searching but did not find much. What do you think of this caliber and its performance. For those that have one, what kind of velocities are you getting and what grain bullet. Also other than maybe being stuck with the super short actions, any drawbacks to them. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by 'stuck with short actions'. The shorter the better in my view..
But anyway a 6.5wssm is as long(loaded) as a typical 243win. This because ~140gr bullets are very long(like spears).

When you wonder what we think of this cartridge, I wonder if you realize that it is a wildcat, and not commercially available. Few have chambered in it.

I've put one together and have been shooting 139 Lapuas. My tuned load in 28" barrel runs ~3080fps. I have gone as high as 3250 during load development without damaging brass using IMR4350. And I am always concerned about my brass as I have alot of work and expense in it.
It's tough stuff, and some of the best I've ever seen/measured.
The main problem however(there's always one), is that wssm brass is extremely thick. IMO it has to be turned to get any real accuracy from it.

I use a long action(BAT RS) and cannot imagine using anything shorter without cutting away too much for port. Another thing to remember in magnum diameter cartridges is that their actions use larger threading/ring. This, so that there remains the needed 'barrel steel' around the larger diameter chamber. If you don't mind this, your brass will not last like mine does. I have well over 20 reloads on mine.

I love the cartridge, and never understood why Winchestor didn't go there.

No I understand it not being a commercially loaded cartridge and from everything I did find, neck turning is needed. I don't have a problem with the brass prep as I usually do it anyway. The reason I'm asking is my local smith whom I'm having put together another rifle, offered it for sale. It was a customer's rifle that flaked on him after it was built and left him with the bill. He wants to sell for parts only. It includes a set of dies, some brass, bullets and a few other things. He has already installed an extended magazine box, floated and bedded the stock and put on a 24" tube. His price seemed fair and it is built off of a winchester super short. I don't usually fall for the cute factor but this little thing caught my eye. I was trying to see any info whether good or bad. Thanks for the reply.

I will second Mikecr in that I think you will like it.

I have one that is a straight 25 WSSM necked up to 6.5mm. It shoots really well.

Being a 6.5mm there is a much better bullet selection than the 25 WSSM / 25-06.

They are definitely unique.

I think you wil enjoy the cartridge. I find it very accurate and enjoyable to shoot. The Win 25wssm brass that I have is very good and I get very low runout for loaded rounds. I tried the 123 scenars and they have shot so well I haven't tried the 139 or 140gr bullets yet. I've been using H4350 with very good results.

So is anyone using this setup on the WSSM Model 70 action? Are the handloads too long?

I saw somnewhere online someone had necked up to 7mm on the 243WSSM as well.

I am looking at trading for a 243wssm to use as a donor but options seem limited.

I'm using a win mod 70 wssm action and yes the loaded rounds are too long to fit in the mag.
I had the barrel throated long.

Mine is built on a Savage Model 16 - 7WSM action. I seat the bullets out real long too. Have no problems with magazine length. And if I want I can swap the 7 WSM barrel back on in about 15 to 20 minutes.

I've been looking at the 6.5wssm also.....I've got a Browning A-Bolt chambered in 300WSM. Would it be possible to have this rifle rebarreled for the 6.5wssm?

Thanks

SS,

It works in WSSM or WSM supposedly.

going to the WSSM gives you about a .4 inch shorter case and you would likely be able to use magazine.

Not sure what different bullets would do to you if you wante to just neck down.

I picked up this link from somebody else on this site and it is a rechamber/rebarrel function on ammoguide interactive. Pretty cool to get you in ball park.

RockZ,

How much length would need to be added to the magazine to allow you to use the gun as a repeater?

Basically can it be done with a little modification or is it simply impossible given the aftermarket parts availability of WSSM actions.

My reamer from Dave Kiff over at PT&G should be showing up this week!

Now I am just waiting on my Pac-Nor barrel.

140 gr. Berger Match VLD = nothing like having the bullet almost as long as the case!!
BTW....I will be using it as a single-shot

.204 Ruger on left for comparison!
