shooting hand position in prone position

Hey guys,

still new to shooting and had a question about hand tension/placement with the trigger hand.

on the bench I can get a good comfortable position with a firm but not hard grip on the stock that will allow good placement of my trigger finger to squeeze straight back.

Shooting prone though, I feel like my hand/ wrist is cramped in order to get a good placement of my trigger finger.

To get a good position of my trigger finger on the trigger my hand has to come off the grip and only my fingers and thumb are touching the stock but not wrapped around it.

Question, do I learn to shoot with a "light hold" leaning into the bipod? or just deal with the awkward hand position and still use firm hold?

I have the same problems. What it boils down to is if you are using a standard style stock, they are not designed with prone position in mind. That is why they have designed pistol grip style stocks. It allows your hand to be in a more natural position when lying on the ground.

you mean the vertical grip style stocks correct?? That's what I figured.... My stock is a hogue overmoulded for the howa 1500. not the greatest to begin with, but it's hard to find another stock that fits the howa long action....I think my next option is manners or mcmillan...

I was hoping that there was a way to build up the stock around the grip area, or that it would be ok to shoot with just light touches on the stock and lean into the pod while prone....

I'll have to experiment....

As long as you can handle the caliber, a light touch should not be a problem. One thing you can do is losen your thumb over the top and slide your palm down a little. I can shoot prone with my hogue better than my stock on my stock savage. It has a little better defined pistol grip.

Mid-way has some stick on palm swell pads that my dad put on a couple of his rifles and they give your hand some support so it doesn't feel like things are to loose and you can have a comfortable grip.

Thanks I'll check into the palm swells....

tank, thanks for the tip. That's pretty much what I've been doing....my fingers are little short and that's where the problem lies...I can get good thumb placement and trigger finger placement, but the rest of my fingers lay about 1-1.5" ahead of the pistol grip with just my finger tips able to curl around and touch the stock. shooting from other positions other than prone the hogue stock is acutally really comfortable...

it almost feels like I need a grip extension towards the trigger guard so my hand can get around it...

frogman,

You might want to look at a thumbhole stock like a Manners GAT.
That is the stock that is on this rifle.

Thanks! That looks like it might fit what I'm looking for...do they have a bedding block in them or do I need to bed it?

You will need to have it bedded. Use Devcon steel putty. Best stuff I have ever seen.
