I am thinking about purchasing an xp. Its currently chambered in 7mm08. What could I turn that into? I dont think I want to keep it stock nor do I want a 7mm08.

Thanks for the help.

I have a 7 SAUM that Kirby built for me. I really like it. It has a 17 inch barrel plus brake. Recoil is very mild and I shoot 140 AB's @ 3000 fps +/-.

I know a couple guys on here that have 7 WSM's and they really like thiers.

Of course you don't really need a magnum, one of the fellas over on Specialty Pistols just took an Antelope @ 875 yards with his xp in .284 shooting 168 Bergers!

I really like the 6.5x284 and the 6x284. I have a 7wsm pistol I love, but now I want a lighter pistol(7wsm is about 11lbs) and think one of those two is next. With a different bolt you could do just about anything... What do you plan to do with it? We should have a specialty pistol meet and check each others guns out! Jim See just finished up my buddies 300wsm pistol that is built on the target action, He's picking it up tomorrow!

Are you keeping the 7mm barrel and wanting to rechamber?
What aspirations do you have for this XP?

I am open to ideas. I don't want to keep it stock. I am not going to keep the stock or the barrel on it. I am basically using the receiver as a platform to have Jim at Center Shot build something. With that receiver what could I build. Could I do a WSM or a 6.5 x 284? I dont know how long or wide of a shell I could put in there since it is starting as a 7mm08.

I want to use it for Antelope, Mule Deer, Whitetail and things like that. I am a rifle hunter so this would be my first entry into a specialized pistol other than a stock Thompson Center. I am not the type to do things twice so I want to put the money into it once.

Thanks for the help.

rtv900, When reading your first post, I assumed you were inquiring about rechambering possibilities. That's why I mentioned the 284 Win.

If you are considering rebarreling possibilities, then you have several choices. Kirby Allen built my 6.5 WSM from a 7BR action. You can open the boltface if necessary. Perhaps Kirby or some of the gunsmiths can be more specific. For deer/antelope size game the 6.5 WSM is a fine cartridge capable of handling medium sized game at extended range.

You mentioned that you did not intend to keep the stock. Depending on barrel contour and diameter, you may wish to consider either H-S Precision or McMillan. I have both and like both. Good luck on whatever you decide. A custom XP built right is a shooting machine.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. That 6.5 WSM sounds like a cool cartridge. I have read about that one before and people really seem to like it.

You can easily do either.
Comes down to what you want, distances you want. Jim will put on an external bolt stop/bolt release and will put it back as far as he can on the action.
Depending on barrel length the 6.5-284 will be a little faster than a 260 Rem in a rifle and the 6.5WSM should be right around what a 6.5-284 can do in a rifle.
These are approximate comparisons, but they should be close.

Jim just finished a rear grip 6.5-284 XP for me this past spring and it shoots lights out:D
