The other day I was in a gun store and heard a man talking about the trophy that he had
seen on his game camera. The guy he was talking to ask him how big he was and his reply
was I don't know but he was the biggest that I have ever seen replied the hunter.
Then the other guy commenced to tell him that if it wasn't at least a 190 score then it was
not a trophy white tail.
The hunter looked disappointed and eventually walked away from this guy and continued to
shop.
After seeing his disappointment I had to console him when I got the chance and it was not
long before he walked by and I told him that I had over heard him say he had seen a trophy
on his game cam.
He replied "Well I guess it ain't no trophy" according to that guy over there.
When I ask him how big he was , he said it was a 10 pointer that was out past his ears.
Then I ask him how the deer measured up to other deer killed on his lease. And he said that
no one has ever killed one as big as this one in over 25 years.
So at this point I proceeded to tell him about what I though a trophy of any kind was and some
of my favorite trophies starting with the first deer my son killed (An 8 point that scored around
110 inches net.) and another one that I hunted for three years before finally out smarting him
(A nice 15 point deer that scored 153 3/8'') not big according to the guy behind the counter but
the largest ever killed on this ranch in over 50 years.
The guy began to grin and ask how to score the deer and I answered there was several ways
but the best way was with his eyes and not to worry about what the book said It is what you
think that's is important because most people never get the chance or have the money to make
a trophy hunt so in my opinion if it is the largest deer on the place then it is a trophy because
he did not get that big being stupid.
We parted ways and he said thanks that he felt better and would try and harvest that deer no
matter how long it took.
After finishing my looking around I decided some pay back was in order so I eased over to the
counter with the expert behind it and struck up a conversation with him about hunting and if
he knew of any good places to hunt. He proceeded to tell me about the place he hunted and
how big the deer were. When asked how big was the biggest one he ever took off the place
he proudly showed me some pictures and one of the mounts on the wall that was his.
Even though he was the undisputed trophy king I didn't see a single deer that would score over
140 net B&C. He also claimed the one on the wall scored 185 ( The tape he used must be
the one he uses to measure his Johnson.
So the reason for this post is to tell everyone that is new or has never been lucky enough to take a
190+ deer or any other animal in the top 20 of there species don't worry about what others say
they have done and be happy with what you have done.
Every one that hunts hopes for a once in a lifetime hunt and a B & C record book animal but if
this is the only reason you hunt then prepare yourself for years of disappointment.
Enjoy hunting for what it is not what someone tells you it should be. And if you are lucky enough
to take a really nice animal that's just more gravy on the steak.
