Barrel Contour?

I am inching forward on a semi long range build on somewhat of a diet and am undecided on barrel contour.

Is something like a 26" #4 fluted Brux too light? It would save about a half pound over the #5

Caliber will be 7WSM, Trued and timed Savage Long action, stock TBD.

My target is 7-8 pounds for stock, action and barrel.


Edited to add: The goal for the rifle is Deer out to 8-900, Elk and other larger game to maybe 5-600. Paper occasionally as far at it will reach.

I knocked around exactly the same problem and after talking with the smith I decided on a Brux #5 contour. After it's chambered and finished at 26 inches it will lighten up a little over its posted weight. I chose not to have it fluted but fluting I think picks up around half pound. I have been trying to find the sweet spot between backpack rifle and a dedicated long range rig. I think this rifle will be at 9lbs before the scope.

My problem here exactly, I am trying to build a rifle that is as close to a do all rig as possible but that means tough choices. I can't decide which side of the equation to err on. From a pure how it will be used standpoint I probably should favor the lighter weight. From a what I want it needs longer legs.

Boyds ran a sale today that may have helped the decision some, their lightweight thumbhole laminates were pretty cheap so the action will wear one of those soon. Not necessarily permanant but initially anyway.

Got the same question about my Rem 700 build, Sendero profile or #5 Shillen.
Currently using a medalist stock that I picked up from Cabella's. Also have Parrish pillar bedding inserts to complete the project. I think the difference wil be an 8 pound or a 9 pound rifle pre scope. This one will be in 7mm rem mag.

I have been going through the same process for rebarreling a 300 Win Mag. I just ordered a Broughton 4.1 contour. It's just a little heavier than the #4 but only a couple ounces. It also has a bit longer chamber area. I'm hoping to stay under or just around 7 lbs with the McMillan Edge stock.
