H1000 Or Retumbo

Hi,

I would like to know what 338 Lapua owners prefer, H1000 or Retumbo for 300smk's? Everthing that I could find seems to favor H1000. Also, which powder is more temperature sensitive?

From what I have found on LRH and other sites, Retumbo seems to give better velocities than H1000. Look forward to hearing your suggestions.

I am running 92gr H1000. I am getting about 1" Groups at 300 yards. Velocity is around 2750 out of a 26" tube as I recall.

That says it all about H1000 in your gun. I can only hope mine does that well when I get it.

My barrel is a Lilja 1-10 twist, *8 contour w/28 1/2 barrel + Muzzle Brake. I'm pretty sure H1000 is the way to go, but would like to hear about folks using the Retumbo. If all else fails...I will try both powders when I get the rifle.

I'm just starting out on this, but I'm finding Retumbo better than H1000 in several of my barrels. In fact, if you want more H1000, I'll trade you. Just PM.

Would you mind sharing a little more info about your loads with Retumbo? Velocity, ES, SD, etc. I would also like to find out how temp sensitive Retumbo is if you know.

What about RL25 and US869? Are many of you using either of these powders in your 338LM with the 300smk's?

Not 338, but I have tried both in my 7mm STW. I can get higher velocities with the Retumbo than the H1000. If I continue to load up the H1000 attempting to get close to launching a 168 gr Sierra MK at 3200 fps as I get with the Retumbo, I start getting severely flattened primers and I get nervous about pushing any harder. The best velocity I can get with the H1000 is about 3080 fps.

I assume the same relationship between the powders would exist in the 338.

That sounds inline with what I have read over at Sniperhide. Very good velocity and bugeye groups.

just wondering why you would be trying to get Sierra MK up to max fps since they're only made for hitting paper and not for penetrating meat or bone ? Have you used MK for hunting with any success cuz I've found them very accurate in my 8mm Rem Mag.

No never would use the Sierra MK for hunting living creatures. However, I do hunt inanimate objects like milk jugs, tobacco tins and recently have been trying to nail a pesky golf ball at 500 yards. So far he has escaped every attempt.

There are a lot of guys here that use SMK's for hunting. A great many are using the 300gr SMK in .338 for long range hits on elk and deer, me included. Do some searches and see how many people are hunting with them. This subject has been debated in depth so I am sure you will be able to find more than enought threads to read.

H1000 has always worked well in standard Lapuas and the Ack Imp versions.

I have not shot Retumbo in my 338 AI, but H1000 hammers in almost every gun and testing US869 now.

Another go to powder that most forget is MRP for 250s and under and MRP2 for the 300s. My first 338 AI would run 300s at an easy 2975 with MRP2.

Dave Wilson was getting 200 fps more with MRP compared to other powders shooting his 338 Bullpup with 225s. Dave get your elk?

Dang, out of MRP2 now.

Anyone had any luck with US869.
