AB or BST for lrh red stag?

What would be optimal for 30 cal lrh red stag?

Bullet choise would be 165 ab or 168 bst.

Red Stags are not that hard to kill with good bullet placement. Any good 30 cal bullet in that weight range will do the job so long as it expands.

I have found Nosler 165grn BT's to work OK out of a .30-06.

For long range shooting I would go for the one that is the most accurate in your rifle.

For LRH, my first choices would be and are (for my 300 RUM and WSM) 200 AB, 180 E-Tip, 180 AB. They have better BC's.

By BST, do you mean Ballistic Silver Tip or Ballistic Tip?

thats ballistic tip. I am choosing a lighter bullet 168 or 165 due to my caliber which is 30-06.

I dont intend to shoot 1k game at this moment, maybe later after more experience

Pretex, well then you need to get a 300 WSM

On the more serious side, the 165/168 bullets would be better out of a 30-06 up to about 600 yds. I personally would go with the AB's first because IMO they are a better hunting bullet. I would only use BT's for varmit and target shooting.

You might try some RL 17 if you can get it. I've heard some good results with it in the .06

I really like accubonds for closer range but with reduced velocities I would go with the ballistic tip or a Berger VLD for long range.

There is nothing wrong with the Ballistic Tip bullet. I use the 150gn in my 7mmRM at a muzzle velocity of 3211fps. That's pretty fast and they are surgical (read as: pin-point accurate). I have actually taken head shots on smaller deer at 200yds with this bullet.
I killed a 250lb black bear with this same bullet at 15 steps. The bullet went completely through both shoulders and the bear was DRT. I haven't found them to be frangible as some folks have.
I was almost persuaded to cross over to the higher priced AccuBond, but shooting that bear at that close of a range settled it for me. My rifle doesn't shoot the 168gn Berger VLD accurate enough for me so it's settled. JohnnyK.

I like the AB but keep the velocity up to at least 1800 fps for reliable expansion.
They are great from point blank out till you lose velocity.

When you risk velocities below 2000 fps on down you may want a more fragile bullet like the Berger.

The alternative is a Berger from point blank, but you should pick your close in shots carefully.

Bergers and AB's are both advertised to expand @1800 fps.

I use to use the 165 ballistic tip in my 30/06. Never had a problem with it, took a large stag at 8 yards with it, bullet when in the chest (frontal) and ended up in the back strap. Most of my hunting was close range in the bush, with some shots out to 200-300 yds, never used it at real long range, but would have been happy to.
