Hello, I've been lurking here for several months and finally decided to register. I'm in the Marine Corps, currently stationed at Quantico. I'm from western Nebraska originally and am looking forward to moving back to the western part of the US when I retire. I've been a hunter and gun collector my entire life and have been shooting NRA service rifle off and on for the last ten years, the last two years I've been pretty serious about it. I plan on trying F-Class within the next couple of months and stumbled across this site while looking for information on long range shooting.

Mustang- I'll be at Quantico for a match this coming Sunday. If you want to show up and improve my score on a few shots you welcome to.

BTW thanks for serving.

jmason,
What type of shooting will you be doing this weekend at Quantico? If it's service rifle count me in. My rifle isn't quite complete for F-Class, I'm still in need of some optics.

Modified F-Class. You can shoot my gun(270win). You'll be on my score card ( I don't have enough brass for both of us to get 50 for score and sighters). In other words we'll take turns. I do it for fun not to compete. We won't win w/ my gun but if you haven't had the opportunity to shoot 800-1000, here it is.

Thank you for the very kind offer, I might take you up on that. However, I hate to deprive you of your trigger time and ammunition. I've shot at 1200 with a boltgun before but that was over ten years ago and with an issued rifle. I might come out and shoot my NM AR with iron sights, I have plenty of 80 gr SMKs on hand. In addition, it would provide comic relief for all of you with enough sense to take advantage of those new fangled rifle scopes. I'll let you know about the offer, regardless, I plan on being there. What time, what range, and what is the entry fee?

Speaking of scopes, what are you using? I have a Remington 700 5R Mil-Spec .308 sitting in its box right now and the only thing I'm missing is a scope. I bought the 5R for a budget tactical rifle and planned on putting a Leupold Mark 4 4.5x14 LR/T on it. The idea of shooting F-Class with it was almost an afterthought. It seems that most F-Class shooters are using scopes with much more magnification. I'd like to look through some peoples scopes at 1,000 to determine exactly what I need.

Most F classers do use more magnification, but there are guys with good eyes shooting with 10 power scopes. That Mark 4 will work, at least to get you going.

Remember, F class was started for guys whose eyes didn't let them shoot iron sight competitions, so if you can shoot irons out to 600, you certainly can shoot F class with a 14 power scope!

The important thing is to start shooting!

Thank you for your service. If you make it out here to Washington, let us know!

I think it's range 4, 9am, and $30 but I'll need to check with .280fan. I use a VXII 6-18, and .280fan up until this week was using a straight 10X. I don't really know any of the fellas there but most seemed like good dudes. I'm sure that a few wouldn't mind you checking out their stuff. You'll get spoiled in a hurry though. There's a lot of really nice stuff.

Mustang...this is Ghostrider. The pattern is full! (I couldn't resist!)

F-class matches at Quantico are held on the Sunday of the first FULL weekend of the month. In September that will be the 6th. Location is Range 4 (the 1k range). Typically registration starts at 0800 and shooting starts at 0900. Fee is $20 to $35. I'm not sure what the variable is. Just know that sometimes it's $20 to shoot and sometimes it's $35.

Both jmason and I will be there. There's also a good chance several other folks from this board will be there too. Everyone at the matches are friendly and if you ask, they'll talk your ear off about their rifles. If you want to peer threw some scopes, the match will be the place to do it. You'll see everything from fixed power low-end scopes to high-end variables like Leupold, Nightforce and maybe even some US Optics. Bring that AR of yours.

PM me and I'll get some additional info sent your way.

All,
Thank you for all of your replies. I will be there on the 6th of September and look forward to meeting you guys. I drive a grey Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab. I'll be at Camp Butner on the 5th shooting an 800 agg for service rifle and will drive back to Quantico right after. Hopefully I can get my .308 up and running before then, if not, I'll be shooting the AR. I've never shot the AR at 1,000 before, that would be pretty challenging. I'll have to sit down and work up a new load if I shoot the AR (the .308 as well for that matter) My current 600 yard .223 load would be subsonic at approximately 850 yards but I keep it pretty mild. Again, thanks for all of the replies and I look forward to seing you on the 6th.
