Perplexed with my 798

Ok so I bought a remington 798 30-06 thinking that the Mauser Action was the bullet proof benchmark like my other Mauser.

Well it didn't exactly shoot up to snuff so I sent it for an accuracy package. Partial glass bedding (recommended for Mausers), barrel floating, trigger job, lapped scope rings, and target crown machined.

A month and 80 rounds later I still get very bad groups! My question is there a relationship between grain size and accuracy excluding wind drift and drop? For example is it possible that a weapon might shoot better simply by going up or down in bullet size? Are some twist rates better with larger grain sizes? I think the barrel twist is 10.

I really want this gun to work. It's a nice piece and I've already got 1200+ into it.

Ive shot:

Hornady SST 165
Federal Fusion 160
Remington Cor Lokt 150
Federal Vital Shok 165 ballistic tip
Winchester 180 Accubond

The 180 is the only thing that came close to 1 MOA which makes me wonder.

Sounds like you have all the correct ingrediants for good accuracy in your rifle.
You don`t mention what powder (s) you`ve tried? Have you worked with seating depths? Is in fact your barrel freefloted? Does the action flex when you draw down the guard screws? (Bad things happen with Mausers should this be the case) and while on the subject of screws, have you checked them for tightness?

IMHO, the 06, with the bullets you listed, and 4350 powder should keep you satisfied.

That's a whole 'nother can of worms. If you find some that shoots well, look on the box to get the lot #, and buy more of that same lot #. Factory ammo will vary accuracy wise from lot to lot. The only advice I have is buy some of different bullet weights and try them. It'll get expensive with ammo costs today for sure.

Well I don't have the know how to reload so I'm stuck with factory stuff right now. But even with factory stuff I still should be geting better groups. Guess I'm going to have to shell out money of different grain sizes until I gind what works.

Where are you located?
