bergers 190 vld in .308

is anyone shooting the 190 vld in a remington 700 short action .308. i was thinking of trying some but have been thinking about how the mag box length of the short action .308 is only around 2.770inchs. will this mean that the bullet will be way into the case if i mag feed. does this matter heaps. maybe the 175gr are the way to go?
any advice would be great.

In a 700 SA, you can get the Bergers seated to 2.825" and still feed smooth. You can always get a Wyatt box magazine. They are cheap and easy to install if you own a dremel tool.

I like the 190's for the 308. With a 26" barrel, I have had no trouble hitting the 2700+ mark. With the high BC's and good weight coupled with decent velocity, it makes for a good match or hunting load.

RL-15 or VVn540 work fantastic.

See, I just can not figure out numbers like this. I seem to see so much velocity loss with the 175s and heavier bullets that the higher BC is not enough to overcome it. Best accuracy for me with the 168 Bergers is around 2650 or so.

I don't care about length, the gun is a single shot. Can you share your load with RE-15 that gets 2700+. I am using Re-15, Lapua Cases, and CCI BR2s. Mind to PM or post your load?

IMHO, the 200 SGK is better. It has a much lower impact velocity requirement and just about as high a BC. Due to its low impact requirments and high weight and sectional density, you dont need to run them very fast. 2500 FPS buys you over 750 yards in standard air with over 1500 FPS and over 1000 pounds of energy. It is not hard to hit the 2500 FPS mark. The guys at Sierra stated that it would expand at 1500 FPS which makes it an excellent choice for the slower 308.

With a shorter barrel and a tighter twist, you wont get the higher velocities in a 308. You would be doing right if you found a 190 load in the 2600 range. Maybe a little bit better.

With your barrel, I would be looking at the 200 Sierra Game King loaded to around 2500. RL-15 should get you there. As always, start on the low side and work them up.

Is this a factory barrel or custom?

its a completly factor rig. wish it was custom then u wouldnt have issues with feeding at all. might look into the 175 vld. have been trying the 165sst but i cant seem toi get them to shoot. pitty since they are half the price and the same bc pretty much

26" 10 twist McGowen barrel. Shoots the 168gr VLDs into .35 to .4MOA at 2650fps.

The load is 43.5gr RE-15, Lapua case, CCI BR2s.

My last 308 barrel liked 43.5 of RL-15 with the 150 BT, 168 SMK AND the 190 SMK. 43.5 under the 190 was 2657. In my latest barrel 43.5 was just over 2700. I am sure it is hotter than SAMMI specs but the primers looked good, pockets didnt grow and extraction was flawless.

Haven't been able to chronograph them yet, but according to the scope adjustments I made to shoot 800, 900 and 1k, the velocity had to be around 2790. Barrel is a factory Remington 1:12 twist and COAL = 3.043 (bullet seated right on the lands). Load shoots .5moa at 100.

Seriously, somewhere around 2750 for a 175 with 44.5 is about right for a factory barrel. There was a very popular load a few years ago. It was 45.0 of VARGET under the 178 AMAX shot out of factory 26" 12x rifles. Guys were getting 2750ish with it with really good accuracy. I have found VARGET and RL15 charge weight for charge weight to be scary close in velocity.
