What long range classes are recommended for beginners? I have been hunting my entire life, but after living in Grand Junction, Co. last year I was exposed to a 1600 yard public rifle range. These distances got me excited! My furthest big game has been Rocky Mountain Big Horn in Idaho at 428 yards. I have taken prairie dogs at 577 yards.
What schools would be recommended to advance my shooting skills? I have three other shooters that would like to attend with me. gun)

I just took a longrange shooting course in Wendover Nevada last weekend. It was put on by Stratigic Tactical Group out of Bountiful Utah. They brought in a couple airforce snipers from Cheyenne Wyoming to teach the course. They had no set coriculum(sic). They sat down at the first of the class and asked what we most lacked and what we wanted to learn. Then they based the class on what we needed. We learned alot and we had a blast. Especially the last two hours when we broke out all our guns and had had a shoot-fest. One of the guys got his 408 CheyTac out and let shoot at 800, 1000, 1500 yards. Awesome gun!
The class was only $320 and worth every penny.

Get ahold of Shawn Carlock. If you want an education on long range hunting in some of the most challanging shooting terrain you will ever shoot in, he is the man to get ahold of.

You may not hunt in this type of canyon country all the time but you will learn more shooting with Shawn for a weekend then you will in years shooting by yourself.

I have had several customers go through Shawns class and every one has had nothing but great things to say about it. If I went to a long range shooting school, it would be with Shawn.

Re: Long Range Schoolling??

I visited Shawn Carlock's website at Defensive Edge, Inc. I ordered his long range DVD. This is the school I looked at last year with a friend. We could not attend this year, I will definitely do my best to attend next spring. :D

Bob,

pop on out to any of the local High Power matches in your area, and shoot a few. They'll take you out to at least 600 yards, and possibly to 1,000 if there's a range in the area that has that distance. Take a look at F-Class, as that's a lot closer to hunting type situations than straight long range competitions. However, either will teach you more about reading wind and other variables than a bushel basket full of DVDs, and you can get monthly refreshers throughout the shooting season. There used to be a Long Range Firing School taught after the LR Championships at Camp Perry every year, but they're no longer offering it. A real loss, since it was one of the best courses I've ever seen, taught by (literally) the best long range shooters in the world. Small class size, lots of hands-on firing work out to 1,000 yards and plenty of one-on-one time with the instructors.

See you on the range?

I just went through one of Shawn Carlock's LR classes (Defensive Edge.net). It was great!!!!!! I really learned alot from Shawn and his father, Bob. These two guys really have the long range shooting down to a science!

I highly recommend this class for anyone that would like to shoot 1000 yards and beyond. After taking his class, 400, 500 600 yard shots seem extremely simple. I have been hunting and shooting all my entire life and this class has brought me way up to the next level.

Money well spent for the experience and skills learned from Shawn and his father. I can't wait to take the advanced class.
