What distance would you consider long range?

I know long range for a .22 is going to be different than a 338, but on average say a .308, what would be long range?

600 yards for paper and 400 yards for game. But that's just me. We've got quite a few ultra-longrangers on this site so you should get a few different opinions. :D

Now if you're talking 300 RUM than the numbers all change.

I have clients that 200 yards is long range for, I also have clients that 75 yards is a long shot for, I also have clients that don't think it's sporting to shoot under 500 yards. I'm with the 500 plus guys. let it be what it is, everyone gets to shoot and have a good time. As long as we all know our personal limitations.

A 308 is very capable to 1000yards on paper but I would cut the distance in half for deer size
game and half again for Elk.

1000 paper , 500 deer and 250 for elk.

Just my opinion

I think the 1 second rule holds true for the most part. Any projectile that takes over 1 second to arrive at the target I would consider long range. It roughly gives about the same amount of time for something to go wrong.

+1 on these responses....

In this discussion (if you consider over looking the, " My throwing knife doesn''t have the same range as my WWII field piece" type answers,) what do you consider short range, and medium range, I assume short range would be from near zero to what ever, medium would be from what ever to long range.

Short range = 0 to 300
Medium = 301 to 500

For a 308 at 2600fps, 300 yards is about .5 seconds flight time and at 525 is about .75 seconds flight time.
