"Short Range" handgun scope?

Here in Illinois, we are very restricted on handguns for hunting. However, I ahve bought a .44 mag Encore that I plan to use next season. My shots will be limited to 100 yards and in most likely.

What would be a good and economical handgun scope for this application?

2x or 4x Leupold

2x if the shots tend to be shorter and 4x if they are more likely to be 50 yards or more. The less steady in field shooting conditions the more likely I would go to the 2x

It would seem a variable would have it's advantages between hunting in the timber and over open fields.

Not used one personally, but I prefer the variables for the reason you mention.

I have not used that nikon, but I have 2 other pistol scopes that I love.

I would say look for good used Nikon, or burris as my top scopes.

Wow! I went out this afternoon and shot the Encore using a Simmons pistol scope someone gave me. Using the Hornady flex-tip ammo and a horrible factory trigger, it shot 1.5" groups consistently at 100 yards! Once I get a trigger job, and a good scope I'll really be in business...............

For the price a Simmons Gold Metal 2x7 is hard too beat but they don't make them anymore so you will have to find a used one.
My second choice would be a 2.5x8 Lupy then a Burris 3x12. The Lupy has a very large eye relief but is adj by turning the rear bell to get it where you want.
For revolvers I like a fixed 2 to 4 power scope or better yet a red dot. I've got a shooter at my club that shoots a red dot out to 200 yds with a TC in 44 mag. and does very well off hand.
Of course for hunting I use rifle scopes on every handgun. ;-)

hi 7mmsendaro, i also live and hunt in illinois(n.w.). i use an encore with a 14" OTT 300 whisper barrel (you may want to look at this round). i have used alot of handgun scopes and i like the burris line the best with there balistiplex. good luck this year with your encore you will be hooked on pistols from now on

+1 for the Burris.

I have trashed several scopes and ended up placing a Burris on my 444 contender with 4
rings to hold it on and have never looked back.

Now all of my hard kicking pistols have Burris scopes on them.

The 444 contender would blow a scope in less than 10 shots (58 ft/lbs of recoil) and rings
would some times break in less than 10 shots.

I like the straight 4 power or the 2.5x7 variable .

I am a Leupold fan but on pistols I use the Burris scope because they are one tough scope.

I recently put a Burris 3-12x32mm Illuminated Handgun Scope - Ballistic Plex E-Dot Reticle, Matte Black on my encore mgm 357 maximum. If I do my part it shoots very accurately. 3"-- 200yard groups can be done(as long as I stay focused) The scope is well worth the money and really helps these old eyes.
I also have a Burris 2-7 X 32mm Handgun Scope - Ballistic Plex Reticle on my other encore 45 cal. ML barrel. For 100 yds or less it would be the better for the 44 mag. I also have MGM 44 mag barrel.
So my suggestion would be the 2-7 unless you plan on doing some long range varmint hunting or have an area where 150 yds and up are available. Both are good. good luck, John

I believe the best scope for the money today is the 2 x 6 Bushnell Trophy. If you want a fixed power, try a 4x Weaver.

The best pistol scope for the money $200.00 that I have found is the Weaver 2.5 - 8X28. I have three of them and have used two of them for about 5 years without any problems. They are clear and you have the option of low and high magnification. I hunt is some of the same conditions that you do. Most shots are 100 yards and under and the Weaver scope has worked great for me. The third Weaver scope that I just put on this past year went on a 14" Contender 30-30AI barrel that I used to take 4 deer with this season from 45 to 80 yards.

with all shots at 100 yards or less, and with a 44 mag I'd be looking at a 2x or 3x scope. I use a Tasco Proshop scope with the 30mm tube on a 44 mag. Love it, and buy all the used ones I can find.

Just got back from a great hunting trip in Kansas. I always harvest some does for the freezer and to help keep the numbers down though I doubt anyone could tell.
Anyway, I brought a Thompson Center Encore in .308 for my buddy to use. He has always wanted to shoot a deer with it so after he harvested a nice buck he tried out the "hand-cannon". The T/C is scoped with a Nikon Encore 2-8x28 Extended Eye Relief with BDC reticle. My buddy made a great shot at just under 200 yards using the BDC reticle circles to make an accurate shot. He said he put the first circle on her chest and it was a done deal. The Winchester 150 GR. SilverTip did the rest. Prior to the hunting trip I sighted in the scope for 100 yards then sonsulted Nikon's Spot On Ballistics MAtch Technology Program for the rest of my shooting information. I then printed a Field Reference Guide showing the corresponding distances for each BDC circle at each magnification. This made it easy for my friend once he ranged the deer. Handgun hunting is a a lot of fun and definitely adds a new dimension and appreciation for those that do it, definitely the Nikon Encore line of scopes make pulling the trigger a lot easier.
