Hi,

what are the differences between 300RUM and 300WinMag?
Are there siginficant differences? What would you prefer for a Long Range Rifle?

For a year now I have been trying to decide between these two calibers wanting the "best of both worlds" and have finally made the decision to have Nathan Dagley build me a Win 300. It just simply better fits the type of hunting I enjoy the most. With 200gr Accubond's it's a solid 800 yard elk carry rifle. One of the most deciding factors was that the Win 300 can be shot without a muzzle brake and that eliminates the need for hearing protection while hunting. I know the RUM can be used without a brake but I'm not that tough.

If I was wanting a 30 cal 12-13 lb long range rifle not to be packed a lot the 300 RUM would be my choice.

The RUM uses considerably more powder then the 300 Win and the barrel life is shorter.

and what about accuracy? what do you think? are there advantages for the 300 Win?

There are other people here much more qualified to talk about accuracy between the 300 Win Mag and the 300 RUM then me. I'm not a target shooter except when working on a load or when practicing so I'm happy with .75 moa out of any of my hunting rifles. Would like to shoot .5 moa with the new 300 Win Mag consistently. Don't know if I as a shooter can do that.

I think either caliber can be very accurate and it just comes down to reloading skills and the person pulling the trigger and his or her abilities as a shooter.

The 300 WinMag is a classic that will endure, and I liked mine a lot. Especially for a lighter rifle if using lighter bullets it really makes the most sense.

The advantage does become quite significant with heavier bullets in the RUM though. With Wilcat Bullets coming back, a heavier Berger possible in the future, etc, the future is looking even better for the RUM. If you plan on having a brake, or plan on the rifle being heavy, or simply can deal with recoil better than most I'd recommend the RUM. If none of those three are the case, I'd go Win.

I had a 300 Win built primarily because that was the action that I had sitting around. I'm getting 3150 FPS out of mine with 200 NPTs and even had one load with 180 Nosler Protected Point Partitions go 3400 without exceeding book max loads. No pressure signs, no problems. A guy that works with me has a RUM that only barely exceeds my 200 gr loads and doesn't equal the 180s. Why would I burn almost 25 grains more powder (he actually runs 100.5 grains of Retumbo and wonders why there are plumger marks on his brass) to get near equal results? Just not logical.

You're getting more than 150 fps higher velocity than I get from my 300 Win Mag. I've got a 25.5" barrel. I think you've got a bad chronograph.

How long is your barrel and how many firings do you get from a case before you have to throw them away due to swollen primer pockets? How many other guys do you know getting those velocities from 300 Win Mags?

I reload for 9 different 300 win mags. Also have pushed that caliber hard to find the limits. In the fastest barrel I was only able to get 2980 fps with the 200 gr bullet and just over 3200 fps with the 180 gr.

Yeah, those are dead on. So there's your answer BigUglyMan of why people would burn so much more powder--because you have to in order to get those velocities. If you aren't needing to pound your bolt open with a hammer after each shot, I'd suggest trying a different chronograph. Maybe your co-worker with the slow 300 RUM would let you shoot over his? :)

This all assumes, of course, your aren't using a 38" barrel or something.

Hey - I feel better now. I was starting to feel like an overcautious weenie! I'm getting ~2970 fps with 210 Berger VLDs and IMR 7828 powder, using Lapua brass. I'm pushing them on the warm side in the Lapua brass.

3150 fps with a 200 gr bullet out of the 300 WM? Dude!
I pushed it up to 3000 fps out of a 24" barrel but backed off due to flattened primers and extractor marks on case head, and not to mention stout recoil. I think out of a 24-26" barrel, 2900-2950 ifps s all you can expect out that bullet weight. That in itself is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
I'm currently running a 300 RUM 3200 fps with the 200 gr Accubond and I consider that max out of my 26" barrel. Accuracy is outstanding and that rifle is my go to for long range elk. I wouldn't hesitate to take a 300 WM, however. Build which ever one tickles your fancy and go kill some elk!

I think you will find on average that the RUM will give you 200-250 fps more vleocity than the WM. That will give you about 150 yds more "effective" range.

As for accuracy, I think that will be more dependant on the rifle and powder/bullet combination, not the cartridge.

I forgot to mention, I'm running a 29" barrel and not exceeding any max loads. it's got a fairly tight chamber. The rifle's fairly new so I haven't shot it enough to see how many firings I get. I know 3 guys that had 300 WM rifles built by the same smith (well 2 plus the smith himself) that are getting comparable velocities. FWIW they seem to be getting inordinately fast results with other rifles built by the same guy. Dunno why but his rifles seem to shoot fast.
