Shooting drops with the 338AM

We had a bit of fun this weekend.

I was over at DogDinger's range and even though I'd shot the 338AM at long distance (over 1500yds), I'd never verified my drop chart further than 800yds on anything other than rocks!.

Dogdinger found something to use as a target and said he'd haul the target around and I could stay at the bench and shoot the drops. He loaded the target into the back of his pickup and headed downrange.

We each had a vhf radio to stay in contact. He drove to the 600yd berm and set up the target, he also verified the range with the Swaro LRF and then moved the truck over to a safe location. He gave me a wind reading from the target and I sent the first shot of the day. He then marked the shot and moved the target to repeat the entire process at the next distance. I shot at 600,800, 1000, 1214, 1320,1483 and then finished with 400 and 200.

We shot all the drops on the same board (except the 200yd shot, since we had a paper target at that range, and shooting the 338AM at 200yds is essentially a waste of ammo!).

The goal was not necessarily to hit the bullseye with every shot, it was simply to hit the target board and document what the hold was for each shot, so I could finalize my drop chart. The wind was switching from 0mph to 7mph and I realized how important a spotter is to watching the wind, as we normally spot for each other and are constantly calling the wind. In this case, the shots were 10-15seconds after the wind calls.

The shots were around 10 minutes apart (that's how long it took to move the target). It was around noon and the mirage was nearly impossible at 1320yds and 1483yds. I nearly missed the target at 1320, I hit the backer and scratched the edge of the tin. At 1483yds, I expected to miss the target completely, as the mirage was moving nearly 2 minutes of angle up and sideways. I couldn't see the white on the target at all at 1483, at 1320, the white was just a smear of light color on the green target.

As always, I'm amazed at how this rifle shoots. I try not to shoot this rifle very much (just to save the barrel), but really needed to shoot and verify my drops at long range).

FWIW: I had 3/4moa left windage for both the 1214yd and 1320yd shots. Just as I shot the 1214, the wind gusted downrange. And just as I shot the 1320yd shot, the wind stopped!

Here is the drop board. To help with size, the distance between the 400yd hole and the 800yd hole is just under 6".

So what was your load data and what did the drops figure out to?

Sounds like a good time.

It was the same load I've been shooting since day 1. It's the load that Kirby told me to start with. 143gr H50BMG, Fed 215 primer, 300SMK bullet. It shoots at a moderate 3253fps.

I readjusted my exbal settings and was able to match the drops within 2/10th MOA out to 1000k and closer than 3/10 moa at 1214yds. I question the 1320 and 1483yd shots due to conditions.

ps: we always have fun when we are shooting.

Good shooting. It always amazes me how little shifts in the wind make a big difference, especially at +1000 yards. Under 1K, the 338 AM is about as good as it gets at countering slight wind shifts in speed and direction but past that, it really does not matter what your shooting.

That said, a lesser round would have easily missed the target many times!!!

Again, good shooting, I would say out to 1300 yards your about on the money with your drops.

Nice shooting. My lot of powder must be a little on the fast side if I tried 143 with a 300 smk I would have to hammer the bolt open.

Perhaps a little spindrift in there?

I don't think so. I shot a group at 800yds a couple weeks ago in ABSOLUTELY calm conditions. I've never seen it so calm and am using that as my zero wind condition. It was so calm that the dust was getting thrown up into the air and settling back down on the berm after 30 seconds or so! It was scary. It only stayed that way for about an hour, but I took full advantage of it. My cold bore shot was less than an inch from my aimpoint at 800yds!

If I get a little spin drift from 800yds on out, it is fine with me. This last weekend, those shots were all taken with at least 4 mph of wind (except for the 1320yd shot!).

I could have shot much better groups, except I was just rounding all my drops off and writing them down, so I could setup Exbal better this last weekend. Now that I have the drops, if I had a calm day, I'd be scared to see how good the group from this rifle would be.

AJ,

Those shoes look like Sketchers?

Good shooting. Yep, save that barrel. My poor old 270 AM may be on its last leg. I'll know as soon as my powder order gets here. If I'm still in this area when the "new" one is finished we'll have to get together to see how the 375 compares to the 338.:)

Yep, you know your shoes! :D

What are you going to do with the 270 once the barrel goes away? A new 270AM barrel?

Absolutely have to get together.

Nice shooting my friend. That rig sure shoots flat !

That gun of yours is a work of art.

If someday it starts talking back to you and arguing all the time you could always send her DOWN UNDER ! I'll treat her right !

Keep it up mate !

Not trying to speak for anyone but I believe all of my customers are shooting Jamison brass. Its not as good as the old TTI brass but its available and it does very well as long as you really do not hot rod it.

I also have Jamison make my brass with the correct headstamps in 338 Allen Magnum and 375 Allen Magnum and have them make it to slightly different specs then their standard 375 and 408 Chey Tac brass. THese differences offer a bit longer brass life, nothing dramatic but there is some difference.

In a 32" barrel or longer, 3250 fps should be a relatively mild load and we are seeing very good case life, at least 5-6 firings. In fact many are reporting the ability to push over 3300 fps and some are going up to 3400 fps with decent case life.

I generally load to around 3275 to 3300 fps and leave it there. Still a solid 300 fps over the next closest conventional 338 magnum and great case life as well as great consistancy and accuracy.

The old TTI cases would take +3400 fps and were very similiar to 338 Lapua cases as far as strength. They were great cases, sadly, they are a thing of the past and we have to use what we have. Jamison put alot of work into making their brass better and they did a good job. It is solid brass and shoots very well.
