Ordered a custom barrel from lilja and was wanting opinion on 22" cut length. Would you see any accuracy difference being 21" compared to 23" ??? Im thinking 22" for my length.

Hey SLG,
I dont think you will see an accuracy diff regardless the barrel length...now velocity, will be so minute you will probably never know.
I say if 22" is what you want go for it.

I have had 7/08s with 18.5" ,20", 22",23" and 24'' barrels and the 20'' to 22" is optimum
for velocity. the 23" and the 24"did not increase 20 ft/sec with the same loads. the 18.5"
barrel slowed down almost 100 ft/sec from the 20".

This was using H-414 behind a 120gr blistic tip.

As far as accuracy. shorter is most often more accurate. because it is a little stiffer.

Go with the 22" barrel !!!!!

I have a #3 lilja, Im also thinking of fluting it. What is your opinion on that. It a whitetail deer rifle and I want to keep it under 81/2lbs with scope.

Normally lilja will not flute anything smaller than a #5 contour because it gets to thin at the
bottom of the flutes and can cause ballooning of the bore. ( I had a 7 STW fluted and the
***()@!& went to deep and about 2/3rds down the barrel it ballooed for about 2inches.)

A #3 contour doesent need to be fluted and it is less than 3.5 lbs.

Your rifle should weigh less than 7 lbs with a #3 Lilja barrel.

Would you expect the same result in a .260? I'm considering a 22" for a .260 tactical/varmint setup but people have said I'll lose too much velocity so use a 24 or 26. 7-08 is awful close to .260 so I can't see it being much different, but maybe you can set me straight?

A little longer than 22" will buy you an insignificant increase in velocity, but becomes a little less handy. A little shorter than 22" will cost you an insignificant decrease in velocity that no game or target will notice. If your purpose for the rifle is hunting, I think 22" is perfect for a 7mm-08.

Whether it is a 260 Rem or 7-08 a 21" or 22" will make you a happy camper.
I shoot these cartridges in 14" barrels-Accuracy is not a issue.
