Hunting rifle accuracy

I'm new here, so here goes...

I've got a Rem 700 ADL 300WM sporter type rifle with light barrel and synthetic stock.

All "stock" except for self adjusted trigger ("breaks like glass" at a very light weight). Has a cheap 5-20x50 scope and a bipod. I've got maybe $600 tops invested in whole rifle.

I've killed many deer with this combo (some over 400 yards) but never did any serious LR shooting other than sighting in. 2-3 inches high at 100 lets me hold dead on to 300, at 400 I hold just over the back and knock them down.

Yesterday I tried some Fed Prem 165 Barnes TS factory ammo and shot a few 3 shot groups (.95 on the micro, that was measured farthest outside edge of holes). IIRC that would be a .65 group with taking away one bullet diameter, correct? Pictures available :D

So, my question is, is there anything worth doing on this rifle? Should I try reloading for this limited use (kicks like an SOB 'cause it's so light) rifle?

My only complaint once the light barrel gots hot, it starts getting inconsistant, with flyers every shot or two. When cool, it shoots way better than I can.

Thanks for advice

1. Put a limbsaver recoil pad on it to help with the recoil issue.

2. Bed the action.

3. Try not to miss the first shot so you don't have to take followup shots and get the barrel hot. :D

If it likes the Fed Barnes and you are happy with the results on game then that is better than setting up to reload and not knowing who much money it will cost you to find a load that is equal to the factory load.

(try not to miss) that is funny sh** !

MUZZLE brake could also help recoil. just wear muffs and puffs. i have had great accuracy also from the the fed ts in my .300.

I think BB has some great advice here, especially point 3 :)

The only thing I would change is do step 2 first. If you never bedded an action before, you might decide you need a new stock after your first attempt ;) In that case you might consider a B&C Medalist or McMillan. There's a lot of good after market stocks for a Rem 700.

One other thing... what is your "cheap scope"? It sounds like it's holding zero well, but once you get past 500 yds, you'll want to consider dialing your elevation and maybe windage in. For that you'll need a scope with good reliable and repeatable turrets. Or... a reticle designed for long range hold on's.

Good shooting and hunting.

I have a adl 300 win also, If you have the factory stock. replace it with something else. with either an bell & Carlson, or H & S Precision stock.
I am replacing my with an H & S Precision if you want a black stock best be looking now. Black seems to be a backorder item from what I have seen.

I have the same rifle. I say leave it alone and shoot the bejeebers out of it.

I just went down the same path and replaced everything other than action and barrel. Including scope I now have an extra 3500.00 in this thing(nice scope). Dont get me wrong as all of the parts made significant, positive improvement but I could have had a real nice start to a full blown custom by now.

I See now.....If you want the best you have to start with the best.
