I got back in tonight from a great night on the hill.

Today I decided to check out some new country that on paper looked fairly good. Got there at 2 pm with plenty of time to settle in and get familiar.

Then around 4.30 I spotted a small stag feeding and rubbing. Distance 400 M on the button. He seemed to be paying the bush nearby some attention and a few minutes later another stag stepped out with goat styled horns. Because he was just trash I started getting setup for a shot .He needed to be taken out of the gene pool so I was ranging a final time when I caught more movement and panned the Leicas to see this big guy with a hind. Distance 321M.

Got the video rolling and checked the knobs dialing 4 up with .96 cosine downhill. Deep breath.... Booooooommmm !!!

I hear that magnificent whack and the deer bolts about 40 m before falling over backwards stone motherless !!

Not really knowing what I had other than a nice stag, I ran over there to find this..

28 inches long and about 25 wide. A nice head to start the Sambar year off !

The big 300 SMK did some major work on the offside front wheel !

The solo carry out was a heart breaker.. trust me !

Another one for the EDGE !

Your kidding me you two buggers are laying golden bloody eggs at tho moment. Mate well done again , chip shot for the edge but take em as they come hey.

Will be down your way soon so leave some for me.

Brilliant its great when you have a success the first time in a new area.

JAWZ,

Yeah, I couldn't walk backwards to increase the range either !!

You just have to shoot them where they appear I quess. I badly want to shoot one of these pricks at some serious range but all close stuff so far. I actually had the gun set to make a 1100M shot too !

Thanks for your kind words mate ! Still a few for you guys creeping about too !

good going DUH....what are the seasons and restrictions on hunting these? is it still anytime/anywhere like they were feral, or is there a regular season structure? it seems weird seeing you hunting when we are just starting summer in the upper half of the world! congrats, AJ

AJ,

This species has a 12 month season with most hunting happening between MAy and Nov for hard antlered stags.

Thats the benefit of living in the lower half mate !!

Cheers

1 thing i will point out guys these sambar stags are considered 1 of the hardest animals in the world to hunt. DUH just makes it look easy.

I have shot 1 stag in my days and quite a few hinds but nothing near the quality that has come from DUH or Topshot this or last year.

Yeh we can hunt them all year but trust me these huge deer that almost seem to swallow up lead some days with near perfect shots are about as elusive as they come.

It is the pinnacle of Aussie hunting IMO as some guys hunt them for years and never see 1 let alone shoot them.

DUH,

You bloody beauty, great stag. That is awesome. Congratulations and well done mate!!!!

I told you I thought we might be in for a good year.

And the best part is there is at least six months of good hunting yet to come.

Thanks Topshot !

The best is still to come for sure.

JAWZ,

Like most things in life, with every step in the bush you are a step closer. Being placed in their backyard sure helps 2 !

I am off to SE S.A next week after a monster buck at range. We will see what happens fingers crossed. It is big gun country out there !

Bob Lee Swagger eat your heart out ! Slow is smooth, smooth is faaaast !
