I have a rem 700 that just wont hold a group any more. I want to make a new rifle and would love to be able to reach 1000 yds or more. What barrel would you reccommend for this action? Thanks

As of right now with the research I just did. I am leaning toward 2 very different calibers. The 6mmbr or the 338 fedral. I know the 338 would be the best all around hunting round of the two but for ease of shooting and longevity of the barrel the 6mm seems better. Man caliber decisions are so tough..

I have a former model 700 22-250 at the smith's right now being turned into a 243AI with a #7 28in. Lilja should be around 27-27.5 finished.

I didn't select this to be a 1000yd shooter so i'm of no help to you there but it should be hell on yotes out to about as far as my ability will allow.

I wanted a some what hot rod 6mm that I could use Lapua brass and would work in a short Rem. action. My smith has a fire forming rig so I don't have to put anything extra down the tube that I don't want to and 300 rounds of Lapua brass will last me the life of the barrel. I have talked to numerous people who shot their standard 243 loads in their AI rifles while fire forming and said they shot MOA with the standard 243 loads.

Since the .338 won't fit in your short action Remington, you're stuck with something smaller. My choice would be the 6MM BR only because the barrel will last much longer than the .243AI. If you're shooting anything larger than a prairie dog you better go with the .243 AI.

Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .470 +/-
225 Winchester, 22/250 Remingtion, 6mm Norma BR, 243 Win, 250 Savage, 260 Rem,
6.5/284 Norma, 7/08 Rem, 284 win, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 338 Federal, 35 Rem, and
the 358 Winchester."

So now Im wondering whos right?? Either way its no biggy I dont think I am gonna go that way. A 6mmX?? is probably what I am gonna do. Unless someone makes a good defense for another caliber that will fit this bolt face..

I'd go with a 284 win. In fact, I'm about to start that project. 1-9 twist 28" barrel. Magazine length is an issue when using long bullets, but I'm doing single shot anyway so that doesn't really matter.

The 284 win is a pretty overlooked round ever since the 6.5-284 and the short mag stuff started. It can carry over 1100 ft-lbs at 1000 yards. That's pretty good considering it only uses a little over 50 gr of powder.

All the cartridges listed there will fit the mag well in the 700 short action.

Now, as far as which one! I think I'd probably go for the 6.5-284 winchester. There is a good selection of 6.5mm bullets and is quite capable of shooting out past 1000yds.

Steve thanks for the reply. I am thinking that its now between the 6mmbr and the 6.5X284. The research I am doing the more I like the 284. Thanks for the help and the ideas guys. Keep em coming please.

Well after some more research I have learned that it seems the 6X284 doesnt have much bennifit over the 6X47. It seems that the peeps at 6mmbr.com think its just overbore and the extra case and size of the 284 and the lack of good bullets make it tough to keep ammo together and utilize the extras the 284 can offer. Plus the 284 is much harder on barrels than the 6X47...
So now I am liking the 6X47 or the 6X6.5X47mm. I just dont want to have to fireform cases and having a selection of stock ammo would be nice. I am not sure if you can get 6X47 over the counter. But if Idecide to go wildcat I am really liking to looks of the 6X6.5X47.. That pesky 6mmbr keeps sticking around making me think it would be the easiest cal to shoot without much work..

So now I ask does the 6X47 offer that much more than the 6mmbr? would it be worth the effort to go that way? How much shorter would be barrel life with the bigger brass?
Thanks again for all the help

The 6.5 284 doesn't fit in a short action magazine. I thought this was old news.

It will not work for a hunting man.

The 243 AI is probably the best choice because it handles so easily. Get a 1:7-1:8 twist so you can shoot the big boys.

Also, you could do a 220 swift. They're not the barrel burners that they used to be, and with the right twist you can load some awesome BC bullets.

On the other hand, accuracy systems inc will bore out your bolt face for 100 bucks and you could do a 7 WSM....then you've got it all.

Also, the 6.5 X 47 lapua is one hell of a round.

Either of the lapuas will easily outperform the 6mm br...

With the 6X 47 lapua, you can throw a lighter bullet with the same or better BC...but don't expect to find ammo at wal-mart.

However, if you're capable of handloading, why on earth would you buy ammunition...especially when talking about a premium barrel and 1000 yard
accuracy?

the 6.5-284 is a proven winner @ 1000 yards. it won't work as a repeater. the .284 the same . too long with the high bc bullets. the 6mmbr is a proven winner at 600 yards. the 243 with a fast twist might fit your needs. you shooting targets or deer??

There have been some serious limitations imposed on this project. Not sure why. Just like the long action version of the Rem 700, the short action can be extensively modified to work with a wide range of chamberings.

Its a simple matter to fit a Wyatts extended mag box to allow up to 3.000" OAL to be used as a repeater in the Rem 700 short action. This will allow any chambering based on the 284 or shorter cases. You may have to have a throat length set up for this magazine box length but its easy to do and really opens up the possibilities.

Also, its a simple matter to open up the bolt face to accept a magnum short action case such as the great WSM chamberings and their wildcat brothers. These rounds can be a bit ****y feed wise on a receiver not set up for them originally but again, use a Wyatts center feed mag box and your feed problems go away. This opens up your options to very impressive 1000 yard chamberings. My personal favorite is the 6.5mm WSM. Shooting a 142 gr SMK or 140 gr Berger or Hornady A-Max at 3050-3100 fps is pretty hard to beat. Very low recoil as well.

If you want a bit more barrel life, the 7mm WSM will offer great performance with the 168 and 180 gr VLD type bullets.

Personally, if you were looking for the easiest conversion possible for this project, your overlooking an amazing little chambering that is nearly identical in performance with the 6x47. That is the 6mm-250. Could not be easier to load for, no fireforming needed, easy to get brass and cheap brass as well. With a bit of sorting and a little bench work, you can get a batch of 22-250 brass that is just as consistant as 6x47 brass and at half the cost.

With a 1-8 twist barrel, you can get a 105 gr Berger VLD out of the muzzle at velocities from 2900 to nearly 3000 fps depending on barrel length. Its amazing what this little round will do at 1K.

Just an option, this would only require a new barrel with no other mods needed to the receiver. I would still recommend an extended mag box possibly just for the long match bullets to be comfortably used.

There are a lot of good recomendations by the members so far and based on the comment
about not having to fire form brass I would recomend that you look at the 260 remingtion
(6.5 / 308).

This is a great round that has won many 1000yrd matches and factory ammo is available.

A good selection of bullets for hunting big game, varments and target shooting are available.

So you would need a 6.5mm #4 or #5 lilja contour 24'' to 26'' long and a good smith to put it
together and there are plenty on this site.

Just my opinion
