300wm or 7mm

I do not know which rifle to buy. I am looking at a Rem SenderoII or the New Savage with the accustock. To be honest I am looking to keep the price range down. I guess I would like some thoughts please to help make the decision. Any thoughts??gun)gun)

What are you going to use it for? How much shooting/year? The Rem and the Savage are great rifles. If you aren't a tinkerer, then the Rem is the better choice. If you like to take things apart and put things together, the Savage is great since you can easily change barrels.

If you are going to sight it in and shoot it for hunting a few rounds a year, either rifle is fine. If you plan on shooting 1000's of rounds, the 300WM will last longer.

Do you reload?

I love the 7mm RM and have never owned a 300WM, however they are essentially interchangeable.

Thank you so much Aj for posting. I am just getting into longe range hunting and shooting. I hope to use my rifle for hunting and longe range shooting throughout the year. I don't know if I am a tinkerer or not. I am scared to tinker b/c I think that I will mess up my rifle. Yes I reload. I love the berger 168 for the 300 wm and a 7mm rem mag.

Don't be......If you mess something up you get to tinker some more to get it back the way it should be

Seriously though, most gun work isn't rocket science. You just need to be sure you understand what it is you're trying to do, and think it through before you do it.

If all else fails, there are plenty of guys here that are more than willing to answer questions.

And to answer your question, I'm partial to the Savage (mines a 300WM), but then again I'm kind of an advanced tinkerer.

i am partial to the savage line of rifles. as said above you can change your own barrels. i have 2 savages, my brother has 1. never owned a remington. never will as long as savage continues building high quality factory rifles. as far as caliber goes, here again i'm partial to the 300 wm. my dad has 3, i have 2, my brother has 1. they all shoot well with the right handloads. when i got into the lr thing, i was like yourself----300wm vs 7mm rem mag??? i chose the 300 because my dad and uncles,grandpa all had them. another and probably the biggest reason is the large selection of good bullets for 30 caliber. but with high bc/ heavy bergers the 7 mag is just as good as the 300 wm imho.i've seen on this site that berger has a 230 grain vld/bc of .710ish on the drawing board. i cant wait. there is probably those out there that like the 7 mag more than the 300 wm. flip a coin. jason

OK, here is my recommendation. Get a Savage large shank in 300WSM (with the accutrigger). It is nearly the ballistic equivalent of the 300WM, very efficient and is excellent in the accuracy department. Since it's efficient, it will use less powder and have a little less recoil AND will have a bit better barrel life. Then, after you get comfortabe with the Savage, you can just screw on a 338Edge barrel and have one of the premier long range rfles available (same bolt face as the WSM). Might want another stock at that point. The Edge would be single shot. Getting the300WM might let you make a repeater though and the bolt face is probably close enough to work.

The above is exactly the path I took to get my Edge. I remain severely impressed with the 300WSM.

Thank you for your comments. I totally agree. My uncle has a 300 wm and that is the delima. The only reason I like the 7mm is for the high bc of the bullets.

Just type Edge into the search function.

It is a 300RUM necked up to 338. in a 30" barrel, you can shoot the 300gr Sierra MatchKing at neary 2800fps. Don't forget the muzzle brake and double ear plugs.

I agree with AJ on the 300 wsm. I built one last year for a lightweight carry rifle and getting 3418 fps with a 150 gr bullet in a 24" barrel. That is all a 300 win mag will get and I am doing it with less powder, recoil, noise etc. A buddy saw mine shoot and bought a Tikka light and his does the same as mine. One hole accuracy at a hundred yards. It will not match the 300 win mag with heavier bullets but is close.

I found a savage stevens in a 7mm for 249.99 and for a little more I Can get a 300wsm. I like the savage for the custom options. Do you guys agree

I'd get the Savage in 300WSM for several reason.
1) easier to load for
2) 30 cal bullets will always be easier to find in these 'hoarding times'
3) more efficient
4) better barrel life
