7 Rem mag vs 7mm PRC

Because H43831SC and H1K is temp stable and accurate.

I think Hornady has done a great job looking at what shooters were doing / wanting to do with classic calibers and then designed a case that checks those boxes and then stocking the shelves with ammo and components.

They did but with the 6CM, 6.5CM, 6.5PRC, 300PRC and the 7PRC.

Crazy how much hate a company that does that gets from old Timers that love their out dated, and or poorly supported cartridges.
Don't hate, I love the 7 mm anything but for sure if someone didn't have a 7mm and wanted one to shoot the heavyweights 175,180 gr and wanted a new factory rifle then heck yeah 7prc for sure. But if building a rifle custom everything it's 7 RM all day. Or 28 nosler. But that's me.

And yes I am old you got that right I am 53

I'm a 7mm fan as well. 28 Nosler sounded great but I like to shoot too much to have to replace barrels that often. Im
Shooting a 7RM now and decided against going 7PRC cuz the difference wasn't enough for me to get rid of all my RM stuff in favor or the PRC. Now I'm contemplating a 7-300 PRC for the next go round.

Eh, I'm 44. 53 ain't old. 😂

So does a 284 Terminator

Swapping barrels with every mag change 😂
That is why I had two 28Ns built- one is on a Borden the other a Stiller but both have a Blake barrel. Both shoot exactly the same load and both are exceptionally accurate. But even with two, I shoot mostly 300 RUMs (225 and 220s), 338 Lapuas, and a 338 Edge for practice. All have the same wind drift as a 195 at 3000 but barrels last longer. Having several LR rifles allows me to shoot constantly even if one is getting a new barrel (as is the case with a Lapua).

Same age as my daughter. You've got a lot of primer bustin' ahead of you pard. Thankfully it's still fun for me, especially testing the newer stuff like the 6.5 PRC and 6.5 Wby RPM, but I'm trying to talk myself out of the 7mm PRC since I have a couple of okay 7RMs, a wonderful 280AI and an equally impressive 7 Rem SAUM. Oh, those two boxes of 7mmPRC on the kitchen counter? They aren't for me:).

7-300 will have the exact same problem as de 28

I treat my 7RM and other belted magnums the same as non-belted with a .003 shoulder bump. Brass lasts a long time and chambers well, so I don't agree that belted magnums have to 'headspace' off the belt. However, the 7mmPRC checks a lot of boxes that the old 7RM doesn't, so maybe that will be another 'last' gun I build.
👍🏼 In 40 years I've never sized off a belt on 7 RM or 300 WM. I size off shoulder. Never a problem and cases last long time.

7 REM MAG. BELTS MEAN LITERALLY NOTHING ESPECIALLY FOR A HUNTING RIG. Better performance also with 7RM. I don't get the PRC 7 anyways. We have 708, 280, 280AI, 7x57, what does it do that they don't. Maybe it's the action type. but performance wise it's covered on both sides of the prc. Different I guess.
I love 7 anything so heck why not it just do anything for ME..

I'm a huge 7mm fan but the point of the PRC line (and consequently most of Hornady's cartridges over the last 15 years whether you're talking Creedmoor or the Ruger offerings too) are a turnkey solution for those that aren't going to hand load but want "match grade" type accuracy (where I believe they mean consistent 1 MOA or better in numbers) from factory rifles with factory ammo. That's always been the main point along with modernizing classic art ridges with more optimized features for powder and bullet advancements of today. Whether we like it or not lawyer are going to protect companies and dictate what they can do based on the governing bodies like SAAMI.

So comparing the 7mm PRC to say the aforementioned cartridges.

You're gaining 5-600 fps over the 7mm-08/7x57 Mauser with similar bullets. I own a 7mm-08 and added ammo for the 7mm PRC for a future build.

You're gaining 250-400 fps over the 280/280AI with similar bullets. I own a 280AI and added ammo for the 7mm PRC for a future build.

You're gaining about 1-200 fps over a SAAMI spec 7RM.

You're losing about 50-150 fps from a 28 Nosler but using much less powder and extending barrel life by an estimated 2-3 times over what's expected.

So no it's not needed for hunting for those with existing 7 magnums per se… but for someone that doesn't own one then it may be the obvious choice going forward… even amongst other PRC cartridges for most people that may only want to buy one. As Lao for people taking advantage of prefits and factory ammo because life is busy… it's a reasonable option going forward as well. When I think of most of the Hornady offerings the word that always comes to mind is "balance" in that yes there are faster, there are slower, but I believe that they're striving to maximize efficiency with modern components. Again people have been putting animals down long before firearms existed but that's not reason to impede potential progress where it can be made IMO.

I have a 7RM and love it. It will shoot the 100-115 gr bullets in one hole groups all day long, and is just devastating on Pronghorn or deer. Problem is, it is a 1-10 twist and just won't group the heavier bullets. When the 7PRC came out, felt like I had to have one - something that will push a 175 gr bullet to 3k fps, 1-8 twist, and a non-belted case - what's not to like? Bought the Savage 110 Ultralite with the 22" carbon fiber wrapped Proof Research barrel. Installed a MDT chassis on it and looking forward to seeing what it can do.
