NO you will have to get balistic steel. 500 brinal strength at the least. Mild steel will stop bullets my 308 will allmost punch through a 1/2 steel plate at 100yds.

1/2" steel stops MOST of my bullets from the 300 RUM at 300 yards. I would say that 1/2" steel from the 300WSM at the same distance would suffice.
I only have had one load with enough energy and velocity to punch through. All others stop just fine.
+1 on the 100 yard gong is a bad idea.

Don't waste your time using anything but AR500 or better. 1/2" AR500 will do great just don't do any close up stuff. And, I'd also agree that shooting steel under 300 yards or more is not accomplishing much unless you're using a low powered round.
This is the back side of 5/8" mild steel and the two holes are from a 200 grain Wildcat out of a 7mm AM at 510 yards. I shot the same plate a few days later from 825 yards and it holed it again and ripped the plate off of one chain and wrapped it around one of the support legs. Looked cool through my scope but my friend wasn't overly happy about his plate being ventilated and ripped loose before he even got to hit it once.

Hmmm I just welded up some targets yesterday for my 204 ruger! But I only used 1/4 in steel. I used to have a 150 yrd target made out of 1/2 in but the 204 just tore it up. I hope the 1/4 is enough for 400-800 yrds!

I was punching holes in 1/2" @ 600 yards with a 243 Ackley.
, the same metal looked like Swiss cheese at 800 yards with my Edge.AR500 is where its at, plain and simple.
On a side note 1/2" T1 will stop just about anything (within reason) @ 1K.

I've shot holes in mild steel at 600y with my 300 RUM and 210 bergers. I also wore out a 3/8 piece of AR500 shooting it at various ranges and calibers. The last shot was a 308 at 100 that punched holes in the steel and cracked it. I'm thinking that I'd shot it so much that it work hardened and became brittle.
I now have a 1/2" piece of T1 but it craters at 300y with a 223.
I am pretty sure that they are A36 (mild steel).It has been here awhile.
I can get T1 but it has gotten pretty pricey and I can waterjet out any shape needed. I had thought about makeing some life size deer. As soon as I have enough scrap left over from a job.

I have cracked AR500 steel with my 308 and 5.56 but it was after at least 2000 rounds and it was at a hing point.
