just wondering which caliber you have and the reasons for picking it. i have had several 300wm's i am familar with this caliber. it will shoot to 1000 yards with accuracy and energy to take deer. and elk to 800 yards. i mainly long range for deer so it suits my needs. i have had opertunity for 300 rum. but it burns 20 grains more powder,is harder on the throat, and i alredy have a 300wm. whats your story?

I've never shot a 300 WM, so my opinion is a little one sided. Never shot a 300 RUM either, but I just got one.

I think the WM is a good cartridge based on what I know about it, and theonly thing I dont like aboput it is the belted cases. Some say that's no big deal and they are probably right, but why have them? I just dont like them.

The 300 RUM moves a bullet about 300 fps faster than a WM, and in long range shooting, that means longer range shots and hunting reach. The increased velocity also provides a flatter trajectory for less gues work at short to medium ranges and less windage issues.

I think that pretty much sums it up for me.

300 WM for me. Brass life and better brass available. Much longer and more consistant barrel life. 300 wm has a proven track record and will take deer to 1000 and do a good job. If I need to do farther I will use my .338 Lapua.

Thats my opinion.:)

I am using a 300 RUM currently. I picked it because it looked impressive on paper and it is. How ever, I am moving to the 300WSM. "My story" can be found here ------> http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/300-rum-barrel-life-whole-documantation-40785/ After reading this, you will know why I am moving to the 300WSM. After developing all the different loads and testing them at distance etc....Its time for a new barrel. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. This is a shame on me instance.:)

Thanks for this post I have been debating the same thing and it seams to me the 300 RUM just isent worth it for the volume I shoot.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The volume one shoots. Some guys only shoot their hunting rifles a few times a year and thats it. Others are at the range weekly and some several times a week. A barrel burner isnt the choice for a powder adict.

Well, I'm old. And a hunter. If I can't hit it and kill it with a 30-06 from where I am I just get a little closer. Never felt a need for any "magnums" other than the .22 RF mag or .17 HMR. Guess that's no help to you tho. ??

This is a long time debate and there is no one correct answer but I will give you
my reasoning for choosing a 300 RUM.

First I have had several 300Win Mags and loved them and used them for long range match
shooting.

When the 300RUM came out I found out that they were just as accurate, and could be used
at the same velocities with the same bullets and have longer brass life than the 300WM.(More
slow burning powder with less pressure and felt recoil) "OR" loaded up and extending the
effective range by 2 or 300 yrds.

So my logic was why own 2 rifles when you could have one do the work of two.

You can load a 300RUM down to 300WM energy and velocitys but you can't load a 300 WM up
to perform like a 300 RUM.

Barrel life depends on how hot your loads are .Obviously a 300 RUM loaded 300ft/sec faster
than a 300WM will erode the barrel faster . The downside to speed is throat erosion, the
upside is trajectory.

If you take a 30/378 up to its potential it will erode faster than a 300 RUM.

So if I want to hunt deer size game I can load down with light bullets and still get good
performance or load heavy bullets hot for elk size game,

If you have a 300WM you don't have to sell it and buy a 300RUM, But if you are going to
buy a new rifle in 30 cal ,of the two I would recomend the RUM.

Just my 2 cents

Some answers might be found in asking how much you shoot. If you are going to use it for targets, paper and lot of hunting like we do, and put 100's of rounds a year through it. Well, That is why we went with the Win. I searched till I rounded up a supply of Lapua and RWS brass and I am a happy camper. I hate it when I go through the prep of cheap brass just to see it go away in only a few firings. Plus I find Lapua and RWS brass need less prep before loading. But as stated you can down load the Rum to Win velocities and the barrel and and Rem brass will last longer. Still doubt it would last as long as Lapua brass in a Win.

there are no wrong answers here. seems to be split down the middle

That is why I have both. I bought the 300winmag first and 4 years later I came accross a deal I couldnt pass up on a 300ulta. I personaly like the 300wm the best its in a Remington sendero the 300ultra is a Rmington bdl
