Specs say its.25 on the dot in Sightron S3 scopes. Is that too big for Squirrels at 500 yds? Is there glass better then a Bushnell 6500 or a Zeiss Conquest? Or equal?

I've got a scope with the .25 moa dot in it. My personal opinion is that it is to big, I just don't feel I get the precise reticle placement that I do with a regular crosshair.
Can't help on the glass, I don't have a Sightron.

Sightron SIII glass is better than Zeiss Conquest glass. Better resolution and better light transmission, comparing my 6-24X50mm SIII to my 4.5-14x44mm Zeiss Conquest.
The crosshair on my 6-24x50mm LR mil-dot is 0.1" thick at 100 yds - with the scope set on 24X power. If you twist turrets to correct for range/elevation, the size of the dots won't matter - the intersection of the crosshair will cover ~1/2" at 500 yds. I don't see this being too large to center the intersection of the crosshairs on a ground squirrel.
If you're going to hold over using the mil-dot reticle for different ranges, then at 24X power, a 0.25" diameter mil-dot at 100 yds would cover 1 1/4" at 500 yds. The mil-dot may be a bit on the large side for a ground squirrel at 500 yds.
If you turn the scope power down from 24X to 12X on my scope, the size of the crosshair and dots would double in size at both 100 yds and 500 yds.

It's an older Tasco World Class Plus 8x32x50. Not very good glass especially on higher magnifications. It's on my upgrade list, just don't have the funds.

if i understand Sightron's web sight, the dots on the mil rad crosshair are .8 moa. this definitely seems to large to me. not talking about a center dot, but the dots on the hairs that are 3.6 apart. are they this big?

Chris is evidently talking about the SIII Dot reticle, rather than their Mil-Dot reticle. We were supposed to know that... I guess.

I haven't measured mine but that sounds about right. Just eyeballing they seem ~.25 Mil. They look big compared to the fine crosshairs it has.
Hey KRP tell me about the quality of the glass? How do you compare it to a Elite 4200 or 6500? What about a Zeiss Conquest? I thinking every body eyes are different?
I've never had a 6500 or Conquest in the field to compare it to. My understanding is the 6500 has the same glass as the 4200 though and I'm not impressed with that. This Sightron replaced a 4200 on my rifle. I agree about everyones eye being different, quality of glass is really subjective.
The mildots are .8 and they do look very large at full power.
The .25" dot is very usable. I shot my buddy's 8-32 at 1000yds and it worked great on an 8" gong. It would be great for big game.
