Do you have one on hand to work with?

If so what model/caliber?

Or do you want to start from the ground up?

What's the purpose of this rifle , target, hunting, or other.

And most importantly, how big's the bank:D?

Chris

I gotta learn to type faster!!

Im really wantin to start from the ground up ill be using it for target shooting and huntin. i dont have a whole lot of money to work with right now im going to college right now but i will have money this summer once i start working again. so for now im just kinda trying to get things mapped out and some ideas.

Build a 6br or 308 on a semi-trued remington 700( only lap the lugs and square the front of the action), put it in a take off PSS stock, use a pac-nor barrel or spend a few bucks more for a schillen or kreiger. (IMO the accuracy of a gun is in the barrel and the bedding)

It will not break the bank to build and should be cost effective enough to allow you to shoot higher volume. I have several guns built exactly this way and they all shoot very well. If you are not a handloader the 308 would get the nod.

Buy an off the shelf 6mmBR or 308 savage (Fclass, BR)

$950 ready to go

You cannot build anything on any platform for that!

A barrel, chambering, crown, lugs, front of rcvr and bedding on any other gun is $600-700 or more on top of action and anything else.

The savage has decent actions, adjustable triggers, very good quality factory barrels on those two calibers, more than decent stocks. Both those two are normally shooting absolutely top notch.

if you reload i would think about a 300 mag. It will cost you less than the big boomers and still reach out a little further than the 308. Or you could go with the 300rum and have the option to neck it up to a 338 edge. Either way you go i would get a remington model 700 action . And a barrel like broughton hart . Just my opinion.

What will you hunt, and how far away are you planning on shooting? A 30/30 will be more than enough on deer at 200 yards, but would be marginal (at best) for elk at that range. A 300 Win mag would be too much for prairie dogs at any distance (and I am aware that they will charge you if you wound them), The caliber needs to match the projected use.
