22-250 12 or 14 twist

So I am going to buy a 22-250 and want to know if the 12 twist will shoot lighter bullets good enough.

I am going to use it to hunt coyotes 0-400yrds.

If it is a factory rifle you dont have much choice, everyone that I have ever seen has been a 1-14" twist and will shoot as light a bullet as you care to shoot.

when I had a 22-250 the 1:12 stabilized a 52 amax with 36gr varget really well. I have heard of people using fast twists with light bullets with some awesome results. If I recall the conversation they called the rifle the "Hammer of Thor".

thanks for the reply. I can get the Kimber 84 in a 12 twist with a 24" barrel.

I couldn't really think of any downside but I don't have too much experience with the <45 gr stuff.

The 1 in 12 will work well with 55gr and down . But if you intend to use heaver bullets( 60+)
you will need to go with a faster twist.10, 9, 8,and even a 1 in 7 if your not loading hard.

And as Uncle bob said a 1 in 14 is standard in older 22/250s and 220 Swift.

If you take a look at Savage, they sell their 22-250's with the 1:12 or 1:9 twist. Good luck on your decision. In my experience lighter is generally never an issue. It is when you desire bigger bullets that becomes the problem.

A 75 grain Amax would be lights out on coyotes from a 22-250, they worked well on deer for me from a 223 out of an AR-15.

you must have single fed them, cause they won't load mag length in an AR...
