Scope Mounting - How much torque on the screws?

I'm playing musical chairs with the scopes on my rifles and I've got a torque screwdriver.

1. How much torque should be put on the screws mounting the bases to the action?

2. How much torque should be put on the screws for the top half of the ring?

Wheeler recommends 15 to 20 in/lbs on standard scope ring screws on the upper halves. Supposedly after 20 in/lbs, the rings can handle it, but the bit has a possibility of breaking.

The side bolts/screws have a large range of torque specs depending on what rings you have. Tactical rings that attach with a socket can handle as much 65 in/lbs, I'd probably say about 25 in/lbs on standard Weaver-style bases.

Good luck, start low and tighten until you are comfortable.

Back in november 08 I started a thread on this subject that might help with all of the
torque values for most applications used on a rifle.

Maybe Len will consider it for a sticky. Useful information never gets old, Only the people that use/need it. I can't remember all of the values so I still use it instead of trying to commit everything to memory.

It keeps me from doing the farmer tight method mentioned.

The question has been asked on several occasions
what the torque for bedding screws and scope bases
should be so I though this might be helpfull.

"NOTE" These are based on full engagement of threads.

Wood, Fiberglass or Synthetic stock without bedding pillars-
40 inch-lbs.

Wood, Fiberglass or Synthetic stock with bedding pillars -
up to 65 inch-lbs.

Hard-use service-type rifles in synthetic with pillars-
up to 65 inch-lbs.

Law enforcement & military rifles are 65 inch-lbs on each
of the guard screws.

On rifles with three guard screws the middle screw should
be only slightly tightened.

Scope base screws 30 inch-lbs "MAX"

Windage screws 30-40 inch-lbs "MAX"

Scope ring screws (Aluminum Rings) 10-15 inch-lbs "MAX"

Scope ring screws (Steel Rings) 15-20 inch-lbs "MAX"

Note' If scope base and ring Screws have less than 5 threads
of engagement they should be replaced with longer ones.

Barrel to receiver Torque 35 ft/lbs minimum to 95 ft/lbs Max.

If an anti seize compound is used instead of a light oil use 65
ft/lbs max to prevent over torquing.
