25x270 WSM

I have one built by Hart on a Howa action. 25" fluted #4 stainless barrel. I shoot 110 accubonds @ ~3450fps. I have Redding dies and case forming is simple. RL22, MagPro, and IMR7828 all shoot pretty well. MagPro with CCI BR-2 primers gives me .25MOA if I do my part.

I have a Friend who has one, He lives in PA and he built his before the .270 WSM Ever showed up. He calls his a .25-.300 WSM. I know he likes it alot, and it's built off of a Remington 700 Action.

What kind of info are you looking for?? I can shoot him an E-mail and ask him a few questions if you like....

Information such as any problems or some little thing he would of done different. My plans are to buy an actual short mag and strip it so i know it will feed okey and of course have the mag. bolt face. I have heard they did something little different to these action than standard actions as feeding goes. Loads also, im a 25 fan with 2 whby's one a custon rem Bp action, hart, Mcmillan, smithed by Clarence hammonds. The other one is 700 rem 25-06 opened up to whby. Also played with 250 AI. I like 100 gr. sierra or NBt i will be shooting . Hoping to pretty well get whby. velocity. I get 3700 fps out of my custom with 100 gr. siera fb. I dont see the need for anything larger bullet wise even for long range shooting. I know what the 100 grain will do. Im thinking that little short fat case of 270 wsm filled with ball powder will push that 25 cal. like a ******** super sonic missle. Guess im little excited!
Any help, comments, advise would be appreciated.

Mike,

I think his is a long action, I'll find out for sure. I have a Dummy round that he sent me and You're right. It's sure a hot rod. I think it's quite sexy as well.

I've Shot him an E-Mail with your questions. I'll see what he says and get back to you. I'll be out of town for a few days I'll be able to check my E-mail on Friday, hopefully he will have gotten back to me by then.

Later,

Dan

The bolt face and feed rails are the issue if you build on any action that was not originally a WSM. If you have a WSM action, there are no issues.

I was thinking of a similar build but in a single shot ruger #1 rifle. Dont need to worry about feed rails, or bolt face (as much anyways).

When Last I spoke with my friend he, He had packed up all of his reloading info as he was building a house and in the middle of a move. His stuff is in storage. He did indicate that you were definately on the right track by using a WSM action from the begining. When he built his, There weren't any Remington 700 WSM actions, there were RSAUM, but If i recall they were still hard to find. He used a Long action first, and had problems with feeding and couldn't ever get it to work, He later used this action for another interesting cartridge. (I had thought the current rifle was a Remington.)

He then found a short action, stainless Savage action. Opened up the magazine to feed the cartridges, then changed the bolthead and had Pac-nor chamber the bbl and install it. He then finished it with a Boyds Laminate stock which is bedded to the action. From this point he hasn't had any problems with feeding or malfunctions.

When he first began load development, he was using .300 WSM cases and had to turn the necks. When Winchester came out with the .270 WSM, all he had to do was neck them down and fireform to straighten out the dents and achieve best accuracy.

I have no load data, but I hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help Dan. I know what your friend is going thru, i just built a new home in the last year myself. Where i currently stand now is: purchased new 700 sps in 270 wsm, redding dies, 270 wsm brass, ordered hart barrel factory taper 1-10 twist, got proof after sending 3 dummies to Manson for reamer now waiting on reamer and barrel. Made a slight change so i could give it my own name. I decided on the 25 Bobcat since i own and operate a landscaping business with 3 bobcat products and my company name is Bobcat Landscaping Service, and every one seems to call me Bob. Why not!. Now im in the waiting stage now i will let you know how it goes. BTW the 270 wsm case works so slick in the sizing die to 25, would not consider using the 300 case.

I built a 25-7mm rem mag. It does everything a weatherby or wsm can do without the fussy feeding. Plus its not to hard to find primo 7 mag brass. Might take a look at her unless your hell bent to have a short action. Cheers!

Yea, im kind of on the short action deal. Hoping to have close to a 257 whby but in a short action. I already have 2 whbys want to play with the short. I guess its why we enjoy this hobby to be a little different.
