what powder for 300 RUM

Nate at SSG is building me a new 300 rum. planning on shooting 210 bergers. i am looking for some loads. should i use retumbo or h-1000? the gun will be a 26inch ABS carbon fiber barrel in a 1-11 twist.

I have, or should i say had (just sold it on this forum) an sfII and the gun absolutely loved 210 bergers and 93.5 gr of H-1000. I had them just off the lands i can look up the exact col if you would like. I used fed. gold medal match primers. I was getting in between 3105 and 3120 on a five shot string.

3120 was this a mild load. I was hoping for alittle more velocity. What was your col and were you able to magazine feed them.

The col was 3.818 and it was not what i would call a mild load i guess you would call it mid to hot it would leave just a small extractor mark on the case, no sticky bolt or anything like that, I tried to go hotter but the groups started to open up. As for it feeding in the magazine it would not. I hope this helps you.

H-1000 has been the go to powder for the 338 EDGE which is based on the 300 RUM case, so it should be a good choice to start with for your custom rifle. However, with a 26" barrel you might need to try a little faster powder also.

You need to use what the rifle likes!

Don't get caught in using what you want.
I would try a few different powders, and use what will enable you to reach your targeted velocity with acceptable accuracy.

I have used RL25, Retumbo, H-1000, 7828, and a few others with excellent results in 26" barreled rifles.

Joel is right, you might have to see what the rifle likes. H1000 is a very good powder to start with, it's what I use in mine and it is a very accurate rifle. I have some pics of groups, gun and some load data on my site in the gallery page.

i agree with joel also but at the same time i dont want temp sensative powder. thats why i want to start with h1000 or retumbo. Unless you guys that have a 300 rum in a 26in barrel so go faster then i will try that. i am mainly looking for a starting point.

Since Retumbo and H-1000 are so close in burn rates, pick one and start around 89-90 grains. Move up one grain at a time while measuring case stretch to determine when you are approaching max load. Don't exceed .005". You'll find it somewhere around 93.0 with Retumbo and maybe a grain or two more with H-1000.

My ABS 300 RUM 11.25x HATES Retumbo, likes H1000, H50BMG (with the 208's-220's), RL-25 and very little else.

Beware that you most likely will NOT want to use the same charges in your barrel as you commonly hear about. I hear about 93+ grains under 200-210 bullets alot. In the last 2 custom 300 RUM barrels I have owned including my ABS barrel I can get 92.0 MAXIMUM for a 180 grain variety and depending on the bullet it is 90.0. H1000 with the 200 AB wont do squat for me with any charge. However, H1000 under the 208 AMAX is awesome. So is H50BMG with the 208 and 220 SMK. The 178-180 likes 90.0 of it. RL-25 has worked with all the bullets I have tried from 180-200 grains. Again, 90.0 grains is max for the 180's and 86-87 is max for the 200 AB.\

Youre rifle will be different. Try several powders.

NOTE: Both my 12x and 11.25x barrels like 178's and 180's with 90.0 of RL-25 @ 3300 FPS. And 86.0 RL-25 @ 3100-3150 under the 200 AB. These maybe "pet" loads????? 2 barrels liking the same loads? Sounds like a sweet spot.
