280AI ?

I'm trying to use hodgden extreme powders in all my rifles 4831sc is shooting 140gr nbt's .5-.6" without much work. But it shows little promise w/the 162amax -1 3/4" average for 3 -3 shot groups.

Anybody tried H-1000 w/160 -162 or 168 grain bullets in the 280AI ?

I've had re 22 -imr 7828 and vit n 165 recommended but still pondering the h 1000.

Thanks Mike

Before you give up on H 4831 sc try some different primers.

I don't know what primer you are using but you can try something
else and that may solve The problem.

Also some rifles like certain bullets and will not shoot others.

Most of the guy's that I know love the 160gr accubond in the 280.

H1000 is not too slow. I have a 270 that shoots this powder under a 140 bullet. It is an excellent pwdr for the 280AI.

My father uses H-1000 in his 280AI with a 162 gr. BT Hornady bullet with good results.
61 - 63 gr. for velocities of 2800 - 2925 fps with 3 shot groups hovering around 1/2".

Not meaning to hyjack, but Derek what kind of vel are you getting & with which primers. I have a load with the 140 Accubond & Win Brass & primers with IMR4350. The accuracy is extreme but
the vel is a disapointing 2,850. I would like to find a load with comparable accuracy but with speed closer to 3,000fps.

Ol Mike, I sure don't think H1000 would be too slow at all considering you are using a 160 & above.

I had to get my log book out and recheck:

140 NBT, 24" bbl, 63.2 H1000, WW brass, WLR primer: 2999

140 NBT, 24" bbl, 61.8 H1000, WW brass, WLRM primer: 3013

140 Sierra 140 HPBT Gameking, 24" bbl, 60.2gr H1000, WWbrass, WLRM: 2980

140 Sierra 140 HPBT GK, 24" bbl, 63.0 H1000, WWbrass, WLR: 3001

140 Nosler partition, 25.5" bbl, 62.7gr H1000, 30.06 Lapua brass necked down, Fed210M: 3019

If your accuracy is extreme, you've achieved 98% of what we strive for. Accuracy is far more important than speed. I watched a video where a guy "lobbed" a 185 VLD from a 20" bbl 308 and dumped a buck at 595 yards. He used Re15 if I recall and it was a near minimum load but was as accurate as any bench gun in 6mm.

My favorite from the above list is the 2nd load for accuracy. For whatever reason, the 270 does very well with slow powders and magnum primers.

Thanks Derek!! I agree, accuracy is the most important. I will try H1000 & mag primers, working up slowly of course. If accuracy drops off, I will go back to the old load.

Hey Mike,

I think H1000 would be good as well. Hodgdon has alot of data on their reloading site for the .280 AI.

Do you know anybody with Quick Load? I've used (my Friends) to develop loads for my .243AI and .30-06 AI. I've found that it is remarkably accurate on the load data and not as "conservative" as some of the data out there while still being totally safe.

As an example, I was only supposed to get 3000fps out of my .36-06AI (165g Sierra Gk & H4350) but I'm able to get 3124FPS over a 12 shot average. The Data was a little hotter, but as I said really close and totally safe.

good shooting!

Dan

Thanks guys !

Derek is your load data w/ magnum primers worked up in cold weather ?

I've read some people use magnum primers in colder climates ?

Dano -negative don't know anyone w/ quick load.
Just ran to the gunshop to get a can of h-1000 -they were closed -so i'll have to wait until monday.
Yes i've seen the data at hodgdon alot of different powders -hoping the slow h-1000 will give some good velocity in the 28" broughton barrel.
If for some reason the h-1000 doesn't work i'll try vit n-165 w/ the 162 amax -i built the rifle around the 162 amax if it won't shoot i'll go to the 168 berger vld's.Thanks again -Mike

If a 270 Win will push a 140 class bullet to ~3200 why wouldn't a 280 AI?

I tho't the 280 AI was supposed to approach 70 Rem Mag velocities?

Or maybe I just push a little on the hot side????

Thanks guys !

All of those loads were tested in Huntsville, Alabama in the mid 90s and again in 2002 in Ohio. All temps were b/w 60-70 degrees as they were all in early fall.

I can't remember what load book it is....maybe Nosler or Speer, but in the section prior to load data for the 270, the author who wrote the article indicated that the 270 does either "well" or "best" with magnum primers, so I wanted to see for myself.

I'd probably use magnum primers if I was loading H4831 or slower in a -06 class/ size of case. Here in Idaho, you can't be sure what the temperature will be. Even this year's Deer season had strange weather. Opening week I was hunting in a foot of snow in October. I try to make my hunting loads as foo proof as possible. I also use Magnum primers when I load using ball/ spherical powder like H414 even in my .243 Win and .243 Ackleys that I have.

I actually use CCI-BR2 Benchrest primers in my .30-06 AI. I'm Loading H4350 in it and it does quite well. Even in cold weather, it ignites quite well.

Mike,

What twist does your .280 AI bbl have. I have a Rem 700 Sendero in a 7mm Rem Mag that I can't get to shoot those 162g A-max bullets. It has a 1-9" Twist. I've tried H4831SC and IMR7828 so far and It won't group under an inch at 100yds. It'll shoot 150g Ballistic Tips and 150g Gamekings under 1/2" all day long, but not the A-max.

I may give those Bergers a shot this summer. I've had a lot of luck with them In my .30-06 AI.

Mike,

What is the C.O.A.L. that you want to start with for the 162g A-Max Load. I may be able to get a data sheet made up for it (with H1000). All data is done individually with with bullet, powder, cartrdge COAL and cartridge type. There could be alot of combinations.
I've already asked my friend and he said OK, but needed that Measurement before he could do it.

I need your e-mail so I could send it along after he sends it to me. He's in Penn, and I'm in Idaho.

Thanks Derek !

That's a new one on me -learn something new everyday -or try to.
Generic question- have you seen bigger ES's w/ the magnum primer ?
That's what i seem to remember about magnum primers in standard cartridges .

Thanks again -Mike
