I started out at about 5 A.M and met a good friend and LRH member (Brent)
We combined gear in his vehicle and headed to pick up a couple of his friends. From there we headed to their hunting spot. A rancher who has been having a problem with too many deer. We pulled into an abandoned farm yard and we all headed out to a tree row for cover so we could get a god look into a field where there were usually deer feeding. Sure enough they were there, so we set up as quiet as possible. Brent and I both had doe tags so we decided to synchronize our shots. I got the camera rolling and then got behind my gun, I was going to count to three then both shoot, well I screwed up big time, I left my glove on and as I said 1 I started to bring my finger toward the trigger ( I was holding on my doe, but was still breathing, my breath was rising me just above and just below, I was going to hold my breath on 2) a bunch in my glove tripped the trigger on 1 shooting just above my doe, Brent then takes his shot, making a perfect double lung shot. The one I shot at runs out to 671 yds. and turns broad side. I quickly range and make a slight elevation correction and send one on it's way(without my glove on) and it meets it mark, also a perfect double lung right behind the front shoulder. We then brave the trip in the deep snow out into the field with an excellent driver at the wheel (wade) we managed to skim over a drift about the depth of the SUV about 100yds. long. Thankfully we had gravity and momentum working for us and also managed to find a different path back to get back up on the hill. The video tells the story...........
With two deer down we only had one more tag to fill for the day. We spoke to the rancher and while we were visiting we spotted a bunch of deer about a mile and a half away. We finish our conversation and headed out. We decided to scout a couple long draws moving toward those deer we had spotted, after a mile of walking we reached the border we had permission to hunt on. We were watching some mulies about 1200 yds further. I think my buddies could tell I was wanting to try a long shot because they offered to call and get permission to hunt on that land. while they were calling I got my weather station out an updated all current info into my PDA, I ranged it at 1280 yds. I then dialed in my wind-age and elevation and was ready. When we were granted permission I was ready to let one fly. We had the deer in the camera, the one I'm shooting at is just high and right of center as the doe moves up with a snow drift behind her, I take the shot, after waiting about a second, I see the impact, a bit farther back than I would have liked. After we calmed down a little, Wade and I decide to head out to retrieve the deer and Brent and Wade's sister headed back to the vehicle to look for a deer for her as we knew this would be a several hour project as there was no road access. We had t pack this one out a mile and a half! after 20 minutes of hiking we came over a hill and spot her. Another shot was needed as she wasn't quite dead. The shot was definitely to far back, I missed my wind call by just about 1 minute. Thankfully she didn't go far. The 180 berger went through both hind quarters shattering the bone on the close side and stopping in the hide on the far side. The bullet weighed 100 grains and was mushroomed out to about 45cal. Very happy with bullet performance. Here are some pictures and videos of the 1280 shot and retrieval.
I decided we were not going to have the strength to drag the deer all the way out so I decided to skin it take the back legs,front legs and back straps. I then wrapped the meat up in the hide and sewed it up while I was doing this Wade cut a nice long pole from some bushes near by, we then tied the meat to the center of the stick and packed it out on our shoulders. What a workout!
All and all it was an awesome hunt with some awesome hunters and all around great guys. While we were packing this one out Wade's sister also harvested her deer so, we filled 4 tags by noon. A good mornings work!
I want give a special thanks to Brent and Wade for putting up with me. Wade was with me for a hard 3hr. retrieval and never complained once! Looking forward to hunting with those guys again in the near future.
